Paul J. Thomas is an American farmer, businessman, and politician serving as a member of the North Dakota House of Representatives from the 6th district. Elected in November 2020, he assumed office on December 1, 2020. Early life and education Thomas was born in Karlsruhe, North Dakota He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics from North Dakota State University in 1996. Career Thomas served as a member of the Velva, North Dakota City Commission and Velva Sales Tax Committee. Karlsruhe ( ) is a city in McHenry County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 87 at the 2020 census. Karlsruhe was founded in 1912. Old Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Wrought-Iron Cross Site, in or near Karlsruhe, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe features works by the artist Count Berthold von Imhoff. Karlsruhe is also included in the Minot micropolitan statistical area. History Karlsruhe was named after the German city of Karlsruhe by Germans from Russia. Karlsruhe was first settled in the late 19th century by German pioneers moving toward northern American prairie lands. The North Dakota House of Representatives is the lower house of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly and is larger than the North Dakota Senate. North Dakota is divided into between 40 and 54 legislative districts apportioned by population as determined by the decennial census. The 2000 redistricting plan provided for 47 districts. As each district elects two Representatives to the House, there are currently 94 representatives in the House. Representatives serve four-year terms. Elections are staggered such that half the districts have elections every two years. Originally, the North Dakota Constitution limited members of the North Dakota House of Representatives to two-year terms, with all representatives standing for reelection at the same time. Velva is a city in McHenry County, North Dakota, United States. Part of the Minot Micropolitan Statistical Area, it was founded in 1897 and the population was 1,086 at the 2020 census.
