Paul Schaffer
Paul Schaffer (27 November 1924 – 6 August 2020) was an Austrian-born French Holocaust survivor. He served as Honorary President of the French Committee of Yad Vashem and a member of the Foundation for the Memory of the Holocaust. Biography Born in Vienna on 27 November 1924, Schaffer grew up with his family in Austria, where he had a happy childhood with his parents, sister, and grandmother. His mother, Sali Schaffer, was born in 1901 in Kiev and his sister, Anna, was born in Ternopil in 1923. During World War II, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, and the Schaffer family took refuge in Belgium. They then fled to Revel in Southern France, where Schaffer learned the trade of cabinetmaking. He was arrested on 26 August 1942 and taken to Drancy internment camp. On 4 September 1942, he was deported to Auschwitz, where his mother and his sister were gassed on arrival, aged 41 and 19. Six months later, he was transferred to the labor camp at Bobrek. Bobrek Concentration Camp
Bobrek was a subcamp of Monowitz concentration camp located in or near Bobrek, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland, and was part of the Auschwitz concentration camp complex. It was built by Siemens-Schuckert and held approximately 250-300 prisoners including 50 women who were used as slave labor to produce electrical parts for aircraft and U-boat submarines. Auschwitz Concentration Camp Survivors
Auschwitz concentration camp ( (); also or ) was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland (in a portion annexed into Germany in 1939) during World War II and the Holocaust. It consisted of Auschwitz I, the main camp (''Stammlager'') in Oświęcim; Auschwitz II-Birkenau, a concentration and extermination camp with gas chambers; Auschwitz III-Monowitz, a labor camp for the chemical conglomerate IG Farben; and dozens of subcamps. The camps became a major site of the Nazis' final solution to the Jewish question. Honorary citizenship is a status bestowed by a city or other government on a foreign or native individual whom it considers to be especially admirable or otherwise worthy of the distinction.
