Paul R. Wieand
Paul Richard Wieand (March 3, 1907 – May 3, 1993) was a Pennsylvania German artist, playwright, folklorist, and linguist. He was born in Guths Station, Pennsylvania, and earned a bachelor's degree from Kutztown State Teachers College in 1940. He was elected secretary of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and served as its first treasurer in 1945. He was a radio broadcaster in the Pennsylvania German language on the Allentown radio station WSAN beginning in 1937. From 1944 to 1955, he played the female role, Sabina, in the regional radio series ''Assabe and Sabina''. Wieand was the founder and director of the Paul Wieand Folksingers. He was also a past president of the Parkland Flower Club and treasurer of the Pennsylvania Folk Cultural Society. He died in South Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania on May 3, 1993. Pennsylvania Dutch
The Pennsylvania Dutch ( Pennsylvania Dutch: ), also known as Pennsylvania Germans, are a cultural group formed by German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. They emigrated primarily from German-speaking territories of Europe, mainly from the Palatinate, also from Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and Rhineland in Germany as well as the Netherlands, Switzerland, and France's Alsace-Lorraine region. Pennsylvania's German settlers described themselves as ''Deutsch'' or ''Hoch Deutsch'', which in contemporary English translated to "Dutch" or "High Dutch" ("Dutch" historically referred to all Germanic dialect speakers in English). Kutztown University of Pennsylvania (Kutztown University or KU) is a public university in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Pennsylvania Dutch (, or ), referred to as Pennsylvania German in scholarly literature, is a variety of Palatine German, also known as Palatine Dutch, spoken by the Old Order Amish, Old Order Mennonites, Fancy Dutch, and other descendants of German immigrants in the United States and Canada. There are possibly more than 300,000 native speakers of Pennsylvania Dutch in the United States and Canada. It has traditionally been the dialect of the Pennsylvania Dutch, descendants of late 17th- and early to late 18th-century immigrants to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina primarily from Southern Germany and, less so, from the eastern France regions of Alsace and Lorraine, and parts of Switzerland. WSAN (1470 AM, "Real Oldies 1470") is a commercial radio station licensed in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It is owned by iHeartMedia and serves the Lehigh Valley radio market. It broadcasts an oldies radio format, with its studios and offices in the iHeart Broadcasting Center in Whitehall Township. It is the oldest station in the Lehigh Valley. Assabe And Sabina
''Assabe and Sabina'' was a regionally popular Pennsylvania German dialect radio program that was broadcast from radio station WSAN in Allentown, Pennsylvania from 1944 until 1955. The show centered on the relationship between ''Der Assabe Mumbauer'', a Pennsylvania German farmer, and his wife, ''Die Sabina Mumbauer''. The character of Assabe was a "humorous prankster who frequently was in difficulty with his wife or with his neighbors."Rosenberger, p. 251. History Lloyd A. Moll created the program, and played the role of ''Der Assabe'' until his death, just a few weeks after the show's launch. South Whitehall Township is a township in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The township's population was 19,180 at the 2010 census.
