Paul Policastro
Paul Policastro (August 29, 1900 – November 4, 1981) was an American Democratic Party politician who served five terms in the New Jersey General Assembly. He was a graduate of Lafayette College and Rutgers Law School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served on the Newark Board of Adjustment from 1953 to 1954. He first ran for the State Assembly in 1959, but lost. He ran again in 1961 and won. He was re-elected in 1963, 1965, 1967, and 1969. He served as Assistant Majority Leader in 1966 and as Majority Leader in 1967. Had Democrats not lost the majority in the 1967 election, Policastro was expected to become Assembly Speaker. In 1971, Policastro lost his bid for re-election to a fifth term, losing to an independent candidate, Newark vigilante leader Anthony Imperiale. The New Jersey Democratic State Committee (NJDSC) is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of New Jersey. LeRoy J. Jones Jr. is the chair and Peg Schaffer is the vice chair. Structure The NJDSC has a 13-member executive committee. The party also has a county chair for each of the state's 21 counties. New Jersey General Assembly
The New Jersey General Assembly is the lower house of the New Jersey Legislature. Since the election of 1967 (1968 Session), the Assembly has consisted of 80 members. Two members are elected from each of New Jersey's 40 legislative districts for a term of two years, each representing districts with average populations of 232,225 (2020 figures), with deviation in each district not exceeding 3.21% above and below that average. To be eligible to run, a potential candidate must be at least 21 years of age, and must have lived in their district for at least one year prior to the election, and have lived in the state of New Jersey for two years. They also must be residents of their districts. Membership in the Assembly is considered a part-time job, and many members have employment in addition to their legislative work. Lafayette College
Lafayette College is a private liberal arts college in Easton, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1826 by James Madison Porter and other citizens in Easton, the college first held classes in 1832. The founders voted to name the college after General Lafayette, a hero of the American Revolution. Lafayette is considered a Hidden Ivy as well as one of the northeastern Little Ivies. Rutgers Law School is the law school of Rutgers University, with classrooms in Newark and Camden, New Jersey. It is the largest public law school and the 10th largest law school, overall, in the United States. Each class in the three-year J.D. program enrolls approximately 350 law students. Although Rutgers University dates from 1766, its law school was founded in Newark in 1908. Anthony Imperiale
Anthony M. Imperiale Sr. (July 10, 1931 – December 27, 1999) was a member of the New Jersey Legislature from Newark, New Jersey. Early life He was born on July 10, 1931, in Newark, New Jersey. He later served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. In the 1960s he opposed forced race-integration busing in the United States. 1967 Newark riots During the 1967 Newark riots, Imperiale advocated armed white self-defense and formed the volunteer North Ward First Aid Squad ostensibly to escort North Ward residents, most of whom were Italian-American, through racially troubled neighborhoods. The group was accused of vigilantism, and Governor Richard J. Hughes called Imperiale's followers "Brownshirts". Frank Megaro
Frank G. Megaro (born May 28, 1933) is an American Democratic Party politician who served as a City Councilman in Newark, New Jersey and in the New Jersey General Assembly. Megaro is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University and worked in Newark as an insurance broker. He was elected to the Newark City Council in 1970, winning the North Ward seat. In 1971, he was elected to the State Assembly from Essex County District 11B. The top vote getter in that race was Anthony Imperiale, also a Newark City Councilman, who ran as an Independent. Imperiale received 13,857 votes, with Megaro winning the second seat with 12,436 votes. Defeated were Megaro's running mate, Democratic Assemblyman Paul Policastro with 10,825 votes, followed by Republican Assemblyman C.
