Paul Perera
E.P. Paul Perera, PC (1929–2007) was a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. He was a Minister of Science and Technology, Deputy Minister of Justice and a member of parliament. Early life and education Educated at Maris Stella College, Negombo; Perera gained a BA honours degree in history from the University of Colombo and starting work in the Department of National Archives as the Assistant Government Archivist. He then entered the Ceylon Law College and took oaths as an Advocate in 1960. Legal career After becoming an Advocate, he joined the Port Cargo Corporation, where he served as the Board Secretary and Legal Officer. In June 1967, he joined the unofficial bar, building an extensive legal practice. In December 1988, he was appointed a President's Counsel. Political career In 1977, with the start of the J.R. Philip Upali Wijewardene (17 February 1938 – 13 February 1983: si, උපාලි විජේවර්ධන) was a Sri Lankan business magnate. Considered one of the best-known entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka, he had accumulated a net worth of US$50 Million by 1983. He was the founder and chairman of Upali Group, the first multi-national business in Sri Lanka. Which had businesses in the USA, UK, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Hongkong. The Upali Group which diversified from confectionery to electronics and automobile manufacturing, publishing, print media, leisure and aviation developed many of its own brands such as Kandos, Delta, Unic, Upali Air, Upali Mazda and Upali Newspapers which Insight Magazine UK said was achieved "largely through bravado and wit". Kanatte Cemetery
Kanatte Cemetery, also known locally as Borella Cemetery, is Colombo's main burial ground and crematorium. It is located at the intersection of Elvitigala Mawatha (Narahenpita Road), Bauddhaloka Mawatha (Bullers Road) and D. S. Senanayake Mawatha (Baseline Road). The cemetery is owned and operated by the Colombo Municipal Council and contains a Commonwealth War Graves Plot with a number of additional war graves dispersed around the site. The war graves include those of a German soldier, a German merchant seaman, a German interned civilian and an Austrian nursing sister. There are over 60 World War I Commonwealth servicemen and nearly 300 World War II Commonwealth servicemen buried here. 1994 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 16 August 1994. They marked the decisive end of seventeen years of United National Party rule and a revival of Sri Lankan democracy. Background Democracy in Sri Lanka had seemed doomed as the presidencies of J.R. Jayewardene and Ranasinghe Premadasa arbitrarily banned opposition parties, severely muzzled the media, and routinely used death squads, torture, and kidnappings in the two civil conflicts against the LTTE and JVP. The UNP had simply cancelled the 1983 parliamentary elections; its control of the media led it to victory in the 1988 and 1989 elections.
