Paul Lyall
Paul Lyall (1944 – 24 December 2021) was a British para table tennis player who competed at three Paralympic Games winning a total of six medals including three gold medals. He was known as one of the British legends of the early years of the Paralympics. Personal life Lyall was born in Writtle, Chelmsford in 1944 and he spent most of his childhood living with his mother and grandparents in East Anglia, he had a strong interest in gardening and nature at a young age while working at his grandparents' farm. He left school at fifteen years old and joined up to an apprenticeship to qualify as a plumber. In 1960, he was involved in a motorbike accident which left him paralysed and became a wheelchair user from then on. He was in Stoke Mandeville Hospital for a nine-month rehabilitation and was introduced to wheelchair table tennis and he was immediately interested in the sport, his sporting career developed quickly and an ex-county player was intrigued in Lyall and trained him up to ... Para table tennis is a parasports which follows the rules set by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The usual table tennis rules are in effect with slight modifications for wheelchair athletes. Athletes from disability groups can take part. Athletes receive classifications between 1-11. Classes 1-5 are for those in wheelchairs and classes 6-10 for those who have disabilities that allow them to play standing. Within those groups, the higher classification means the more function the athlete has. Class 11 is defined for players with an intellectual disability. Classification The roles of classification are to determine eligibility to compete for athletes with disability and to group athletes equitably for competition purposes. Athletes are grouped by reference to functional ability, resulting from their impairment. George Monahan (table Tennis)
George F. Monahan (January 20, 1867 – May 7, 1929) was an American politician who served in the Massachusetts Senate. Early life Monahan was born on January 20, 1867, in Boston. He attended St. Mary's School for many years before leaving to work in a cigar factory. Business career In 1890, Monahan opened a saloon on Friend Street in Boston. He later operated a bar at 20 Marshall Street. When the Wartime Prohibition Act went into effect on July 1, 1919, Monahan continued to serve beer in violation of the act. His was the only Boston bar to remain open after the act took effect. Monahan also worked as a bail bondsman. During his first campaign for state senate, he provided $35,000 in bail for 12 men accused of illegal naturalization as well as actor Eben Plympton. Monahan's bailing out of the naturalization defendants was used in support of his candidacy.
