Paul Laurence Dunbar School (Fort Myers, Florida)
The Paul Laurence Dunbar School (also known as the Dunbar Community School) is a historic school in Fort Myers, Florida. It is located at 1857 High Street. On February 24, 1992, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It opened in 1927 succeeding Williams Academy and served the African American community in the Dunbar neighborhood. James Robert Dixon was its first principal. In 1963 Dunbar High School (Fort Myers, Florida), Dunbar High School was built a mile away. Paul Laurence Dunbar (PLD) is a high school located at 1600 Man o' War Boulevard on the southwest side of Lexington, Kentucky, United States. The school is one of six high schools in the Fayette County Public Schools district. Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is named after the 19th century African-American poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar, whose parents were from Kentucky. The school was opened in 1990. With an enrollment of over 2100, it is one of the largest public high schools in Kentucky, and was the largest during the 2005–06, 2006–07, and 2007–08 academic years. It also houses the Math, Science, and Technology Center. The PLD student body, unlike that of most of the other schools named after Dunbar, has a substantial white majority, although African Americans and Hispanics make up roughly one sixth of the students. History In 1918, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School opened around the corner from its present location as the Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary School, No. 101. The original school was part of the segregated "colored schools" system, which was abolished by 1954. The present school is part of the Baltimore City Public Schools system. It was named in memory of Paul Laurence Dunbar, a famous African-American poet, who had died twelve years before the school opened. In 1925, it was renamed Dunbar Junior High School, No. 133. In 1940, Dunbar became a high school and awarded its first diploma, the second school for African-Americans in Baltimore to do so. Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is a comprehensive high school in the Stop Six neighborhood of Fort Worth, Texas, United States. Named for the dialectical poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, the school strives to educate the majority African-American community it serves. History Formal education in the Stop Six area was established in 1907 with the Rustville School, which joined the Fort Worth Public School System in 1924. M Street High School, also known as Perry School, is a historic former school building located in the Northwest Quadrant of Washington, D.C. It has been listed on the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites since 1978 and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The building escaped demolition with community support and the efforts of preservationists and is now a community center. History The school was founded in 1870 as the Preparatory High School for Negro Youth, also called Washington High School. Between 1870 and 1891 the school was located in several makeshift locations.
