Paul Kay (footballer)
Paul Kay is an Australian former soccer player. Kay played 137 matches in the National Soccer League between 1978 and 1991 for Newcastle KB United, St. George, Wollongong City, Sydney City, Blacktown City, and Wollongong Macedonia. He also spent a stint in England for Charlton Athletic but was unable to break into the first team. Playing career Club career Kay joined St George in 1978. In late 1981, Kay headed to England to trial with Second Division team Charlton Athletic. After ten weeks with the club, he signed a two-year contract with a $10,000 transfer fee. On his return to Australia, Kay signed for Sydney City, though his return was delayed by a dispute between his new club and his former club Wollongong Wolves over his contract status. Kay transferred from Sydney City to Blacktown City mid-way through the 1986 National Soccer League season with the fee reported to be $9,000. Newcastle KB United
Newcastle KB United are a defunct Australian association football club. They participated in the National Soccer League from 1978 until early in the 1984 season. History The first Newcastle based team to play in a national league, Newcastle KB United was formed in 1977, but did not play until 1978 one year after the inception of the Philips Soccer League (NSL). Newcastle KB United was sponsored by Tooths Breweries (hence the KB tag) and took the NSL by storm by setting new crowd attendance records on a regular basis. They drew some famous names to play guest matches with them with Bobby Charlton playing a game for the club in 1978, Paul Reaney joining in 1980 and Craig Johnston played once in 1978 and again in 1982. St George FC, commonly called Saints or Budapest, is a semi-professional Australian soccer club based in the St George district in the south of Sydney. The club was founded by Hungarian immigrants in 1957 as Budapest Club and by 1965 was renamed to St. George-Budapest Club. Wollongong United FC is an Australian soccer club based in Wollongong, currently participating in the Illawarra Premier League. The club played in the 1991 season of the National Soccer League under the name Wollongong Macedonia, where it finished last. History Formed in 1976 by the "Macedonian Orthodox Community of Wollongong", the club was originally established on behalf of the Macedonian Australian community of Wollongong. With a huge supporter base, the club was originally known as Wollongong United Soccer Club. 1984 National Soccer League
The National Soccer League 1984 season was the eighth season of the National Soccer League in Australia. This season saw a restructure of the league, introducing a split into two geographical divisions, and an expansion from 16 to 24 teams. A ''Northern Conference'' comprised 12 clubs from New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory, and a ''Southern Conference'' consisted of 12 Victorian, South Australian, and Queensland clubs. This season also saw the introduction of the two well-supported Croatian clubs, Melbourne Croatia and Sydney Croatia, both of which had had recent success in the state-leagues. For the first time in the competition, a finals system was introduced, whereby the five highest finishing teams in each conference had a playoff to determine a conference winner. The 1982– 83 season was the 84th completed season of the English Football League. Bob Paisley’s last season as Liverpool manager ended on a high as they topped the First Division with a comfortable lead. Paisley retired as Liverpool manager with a record 21 prizes in nine years. The 1981– 82 season was the 83rd completed season (84th overall) of The Football League. Overview Three points for a win was introduced for the first time in England. Champions Aston Villa finished a disappointing 11th but made up for this by triumphing in the European Cup at the first attempt. Liverpool made up for the previous season's slip in league form by winning the league championship for the 13th time in their history, fighting off competition from Ipswich Town, Manchester United and Spurs. Liverpool also won the Football League Cup for the second season in succession. The league triumph was made all the more significant by the fact that they had occupied 10th place on Christmas Day.
