Paul James Phelan
Paul James Phelan, (1917 – 2 Sep 2002) was a Canadian businessman, yachtsman, and wartime RCAF Squadron Leader. Life and career Phelan inherited his father's Canada Railway News Co. (founded in 1883), expanded it, then renamed it Cara Operations Ltd when he took it public in 1968. The company had started as The Canada Railway News Company and initially sold tomatoes . Under Phelan, the company opened refreshment rooms at hotels and hubs along the rail line. He opened its first Swiss Chalet diner in 1954. In 1977, Phelan engineered a takeover of the Swiss Chalet franchisor, Foodcorp, a $50 million business, with 97 food outlets between its Swiss Chalet and Harvey's brands. Cara provided food for Air Canada late last century. Phelan controlled through it Swiss Chalet, Harvey's, Second Cup, Kelsey's Neighborhood Bar & Grill, and Montana's Cookhouse at the time of his death. RCAF
The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF; french: Aviation royale canadienne, ARC) is the air and space force of Canada. 1987 America's Cup
The 1987 America's Cup was the twenty-sixth challenge for the America's Cup. The American challenger '' Stars & Stripes 87'', sailed by Dennis Conner, beat the Australian defender '' Kookaburra III'', sailed by Iain Murray, in a four-race sweep in the best of seven series. Conner thus became the first person both to lose the America's Cup and then to win it back. The series was held in Gage Roads off Fremantle, Western Australia during the Australian summer months between October 1986 and February 1987. The Royal Perth Yacht Club was the defending club and the organiser of the defence series. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda of Porto Cervo, Sardinia was appointed the challenger of record and hence the organiser of the challenger series. World Sailing (WS) is the world governing body for the sport of sailing recognized by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). History The creation of the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU) began in 1904, when Major Brooke Heckstall-Smith AINA, then Secretary of the Yacht Racing Association (now the Royal Yachting Association) wrote to the Yacht Club de France, pointing out the desirability of holding a conference for the purpose of devising an International Rule of Measurement for Racing Yachts acceptable to all European countries. Beppe Croce
Andrea Giuseppe "Beppe" Croce (Genoa 11 December 1914 – Portofino 16 September 1986) was a sailor and yachtsman from Genoa, Italy. Biography In 1939 Croce won the Italian University Star Class championship. He also won the 1969 5.50 class Italian Championship on Lake Garda, where three years earlier he had won the Centomiglia regatta (finished by only three out of fifty participant boats, due to very severe weather conditions). Beppe served as an army officer during World War II. After the 1943 armistice, he remained faithful to the King Vittorio Emanuele III and fought the Nazis as a liberal partisan. From 1946 to 1980, Beppe served as president of Lloyd Italico, an insurance company founded by his grandfather.
