Paul Edwards (politician)
Paul Edwards (born February 21, 1961) is a Manitoba politician and lawyer. He served as leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party from 1993 to 1996. Edwards was born in Kingston, Ontario and was educated at Trent University and Queen's University. He later worked as a barrister and solicitor. In 1988, Edwards was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba for the Winnipeg riding of St. James, defeating his closest competitor, Progressive Conservative Jae Eadie, by 579 votes. He joined 19 other Liberals in forming the official opposition to the minority government of Progressive Conservative Premier Gary Filmon. The 1988 election was a landmark for the Manitoba Liberal Party, in that it had previously been reduced to a marginal presence in the province. The Manitoba Liberal Party (french: Parti libéral du Manitoba) is a political party in Manitoba, Canada. Its roots can be traced to the late 19th century, following the province's creation in 1870. Origins and early development (to 1883) Originally, there were no official political parties in Manitoba, although many leading politicians were affiliated with parties that existed at the national level. In Manitoba's first Legislative Assembly, the leader of the opposition was Edward Hay, a Liberal who represented the interests of recent anglophone immigrants from Ontario. Howard Pawley
Howard Russell Pawley (November 21, 1934 – December 30, 2015) was a Canadian politician and professor who was the 18th premier of Manitoba from 1981 to 1988. Prior to his premiership, Pawley served in various ministerial positions after his tenure in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. Early life The son of Methodist parents, Pawley was born in Brampton, Ontario, moved to Winnipeg at the age of 17 and was educated at Manitoba Teachers College, United College and the Manitoba Law School. In 1960, he married Adele Schreyer, a cousin of Edward Schreyer, who served as Premier of Manitoba from 1969 to 1977. Gary Anthony Kowalski (born August 9, 1952) is a former politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Manitoba legislature from 1993 to 1999, sitting for most of that time as a Liberal Party of Manitoba, Liberal. The son of Tony Kowalski and Olga Kolczycki, he was born in Winnipeg and worked as a police officer in the ''Winnipeg Police Department'' before entering public life, serving from 1974 to 1993. He received a ''Canada 125th Medal'' in 1992, and was elected as a trustee on the ''Seven Oaks School Division'' in September of the same year. In 1976, he married Ellen Joy Michie. Neil Gaudry (September 19, 1937 – February 18, 1999) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1988 until his death, sitting as a Liberal. The son of Véronique Chartrand and Ernest Gaudry, he was born in St. Laurent, Manitoba and was educated there. In 1962, he married Leona Rainville. Before entering public life, Gaudry worked as an accountant and office manager. He was the secretary-treasurer of ''Malcolm Construction Ltd.'' for twenty-five years, and was active in the community of Interlake before moving to Winnipeg in his later years. Inkster was a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was located in the northwestern corner of the city of Winnipeg. Officially created by redistribution in 1957, it has existed since the provincial election of 1958. The riding was named after the Inkster family, who were prominent local figures at the time of the province's creation in 1870. John Inkster was a member of Louis Riel's provisional government, while Colin Inkster was a member of the province's Legislative Council (which existed from 1871 to 1876).
