Paul Carey (baseball)
Paul Stephen Carey (born January 8, 1968) is a former Major League Baseball first baseman/designated hitter who played in 1993 for the Baltimore Orioles. He also managed in the minor leagues from 1998 to 2001. His brother is former NHL goalie Jim Carey. Early life Carey was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Boston College High School in Dorchester, Massachusetts and then Stanford University, where he was voted the 1987 College World Series Most Outstanding Player as a freshman outfielder on Stanford's national champion baseball team on the basis of going 3-for-5 with two RBI and scoring two runs in the title game in Omaha. Even before the final game against Oklahoma State, Carey had made a case for MOP when he smashed a walk-off opposite-field grand slam over the left-field fence in the 10th inning to give the Cardinal a 6-5 win over LSU. First Baseman
A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes. Collegiate Summer Baseball
Collegiate summer baseball leagues are amateur baseball leagues in the United States and Canada featuring players who have attended at least one year of college and have at least one year of athletic eligibility remaining. Generally, they operate from early June to early August. In contrast to college baseball, which allow aluminum or other composite baseball bats, players in these leagues use only wooden bats, hence the common nickname of these leagues as "wood-bat leagues". Collegiate summer leagues allow college baseball players the ability to compete using professional rules and equipment, giving them experience and allowing professional scouts the opportunity to observe players under such conditions. South Atlantic League
The South Atlantic League, often informally called the Sally League, is a Minor League Baseball league with teams predominantly in states along the Atlantic coast of the United States from New York to Georgia. A Class A league for most of its history, the league was promoted to High-A as part of Major League Baseball's 2021 reorganization of the minor leagues. The league temporarily operated for the 2021 season as the High-A East before reassuming its original moniker in 2022. Savannah Sand Gnats
The Savannah Sand Gnats were a minor league baseball team based in Savannah, Georgia. They were a member of the A-level South Atlantic League. The Sand Gnats were an affiliate of the New York Mets in their final nine seasons. The team relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, in 2016 where they are now known as the Columbia Fireflies. Bob Wickman
Robert Joe Wickman (born February 6, 1969) is a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher. Wickman played for the New York Yankees (–), Milwaukee Brewers (1996–), Cleveland Indians (2000–), Atlanta Braves (2006–), and Arizona Diamondbacks (2007). He batted and threw right-handed. Amateur career Wickman is from Abrams, Wisconsin. At Oconto Falls High School, Wickman played football, baseball, horseback riding, table tennis and basketball, being named an All-State pick in basketball. The Frederick Keys are a collegiate summer baseball team of the MLB Draft League. The Keys are based in Frederick, Maryland. The franchise is named for "Star-Spangled Banner" writer Francis Scott Key, a native of Frederick County. The Hagerstown Suns were a Minor League Baseball team based in Hagerstown, Maryland. They were a member of the South Atlantic League and, from 2007 through 2020, were the Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
