John Patteson (1755–1833)
John Patteson (19 November 1755 – 3 October 1833) was an English Tory politician. He was the son of brewer Henry Sparke Patteson and Martha Fromansteel (daughter of Daniel Fromanteel) of Norwich and educated in Greenwich and Leipzig (1768). He was an Alderman in Norwich from 1781 to 1831, served as sheriff for 1785 and mayor for 1788. He was elected at the 1802 general election as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Minehead in Somerset. He held the seat until the 1806 general election, when he was returned as an MP for Norwich. He was re-elected for Norwich in 1807 and held the seat until his defeat at the 1812 general election. He was President of the Norwich Union Life Assurance Society from 1815 to his death in 1833. He had married Elizabeth, the daughter of Robert Staniforth of Manchester and heiress of William Staniforth (d.1786). They had 3 sons and 3 daughters. The high sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown and is appointed annually (in March) by the Crown. The High Sheriff of Norfolk was originally the principal law enforcement officer in Norfolk and presided at the assizes and other important county meetings. Most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial. John Patteson (bishop)
John Coleridge Patteson (1 April 1827 – 20 September 1871) was an English Anglican bishop, missionary to the South Sea Islands, and an accomplished linguist, learning 23 of the islands' more than 1,000 languages. In 1861, Patteson was selected as the first Bishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia. He was killed on Nukapu, one of the easternmost islands of the Solomon Islands, on 20 September 1871. Consequently, he is commemorated in the Church of England calendar on 20 September. Early life He was the elder son of Sir John Patteson the judge, by his second wife, Frances Duke Coleridge who was a niece of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Lee Hawse Patteson
Lee Hawse Patteson (1902–1955) was the wife of former Governor of West Virginia Okey L. Patteson and served as that state's First Lady, 1949-1953. She was born May 28, 1902, at Romney, West Virginia. She married Okey L. Patteson in 1923. As first lady, she entertained guests and began the tradition of decorating the trees around the West Virginia Governor's Mansion for the holidays. She also obtained a Pilot licensing and certification, pilot's license while serving as first lady. She died in Mt. ''Okey'' () is a tile-based game. The aim of the game is to score points against the opposing players by collecting certain groups of tiles. Okey is usually played with four players, but can also be played with only two or three players. It bears resemblance to the game ''Rummikub'', as it is played with the same set of boards and tiles, but under a different set of rules. The game was derived from the original ''Rummikub'' after cultural contacts of ''Gastarbeiter'' in Germany. Okey is very popular in Turkey and among Turkish communities abroad. Sir Patteson Nickalls (10 December 1836 – 4 October 1910) was a British stockbroker and Liberal politician and was president of the Polo and Riding Pony Society. Biography Nickalls was born in Chicago in 1836 as a British subject, the son of Patteson Nickalls (1798–1869) and Arabella Chalk (1799–1893). He was the younger brother of Tom Nickalls. He became a stockbroker in London. At the 1885 general election he stood unsuccessfully for parliament as a Liberal at Sevenoaks. He was knighted at Osborne House on 11 August 1893. At the 1900 general election he stood unsuccessfully for parliament as a Liberal at Dartford. In 1901, he addressed a pro-Boer meeting at Maidstone which was broken up by his opponents, and which caused unpopularity for Nickalls at the Stock Exchange. John Patteson Oti, sometimes called Patterson Oti (born 17 January 1956), is a Solomon Islands politician and diplomat. He was foreign minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs, External Trade and Immigration from May 2006 to 22 December 2007. He is the secretary general of the Ownership, Unity and Responsibility Party ("Our Party"), which was launched in early 2010. Since March 2012, he has been his country's High Commissioner (Commonwealth), High Commissioner to Fiji. Patteson Womersley Nickalls (23 January 1877 – 10 September 1946), was an English polo player who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics for Great Britain. Biography Nickalls was born on 23 January 1877 at North Weald, Essex, the son of Sir Patteson Nickalls, a stockbroker, and his wife Florence. He was educated at Rugby School. There he was in the cricket XI from 1892 to 1894 and in the rugby XV in 1893. He went to New College, Oxford, played in the Varsity Match for the Oxford University Polo Club in 1895-6-7 and graduated with a BA in 1897. In 1900, he was gazetted to the Durham Light Infantry and served in the Second Anglo-Boer War. He took part in the Relief of Ladysmith and the Battle of Colenso. He retired from the army in 1901 and became a member of the London Stock Exchange. Nickalls played polo for England in the 1902 International Polo Cup matches.
