Patrick Ryan (English Author)
Patrick Ryan (1916–1989) was an English author whose best-known work, the satirical war novel ''How I Won The War'', was made into a 1967 film of the same name directed by Richard Lester. Biography Patrick Ryan was born in Newport, on the Isle of Wight in 1916 to a family of Irish origin. He was educated at The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School. On the outbreak of war in 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, was commissioned as an officer, and then transferred to The Fourth Regiment of the Reconnaissance Corps of the Royal Armoured Corps. He served in North Africa, Italy, and Greece. He moved to Leeds in the 1950s as Assistant Head Postmaster, and his "apprenticeship" in adapting to Yorkshire life is related in his humorous memoir ''How I Became A Yorkshireman'', published in the late 1960s. Patrick John Ryan
Patrick John Ryan (February 20, 1831 – February 11, 1911) was an Irish-born prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as the second Archbishop of Philadelphia from 1884 until his death in 1911. Early life and education Patrick Ryan was born in Thurles, County Tipperary, to Jeremiah and Mary Ryan. He received his early education from the Christian Brothers at Thurles, and attended a private school in Dublin from 1842 to 1847. In 1844, he led a delegation of students to Richmond Bridewell Prison, where he delivered an address to the imprisoned Daniel O'Connell. He completed his theological studies at Carlow College in 1852, his education supported by '' The Foreign Mission Fund'', and was ordained a subdeacon. In the same year he left Ireland to come to the United States, where he became attached to the Archdiocese of St. Louis in Missouri. Patrick Ryan (hammer Thrower)
Patrick James Ryan (20 January 1883 – 13 February 1964) was an Irish American hammer thrower. He competed for the United States at the 1920 Summer Olympics and won a gold medal in the hammer throw and a silver in the 56-pound weight throw. In 1913 he established the first world record in hammer throw, which stood as a world record for 25 years and as an American record for 40 years. Ryan was part of Irish weight throwers known as the Irish Whales. Biography Born in County Limerick, Ireland, Ryan won his first Irish hammer title in 1902, beating the great Tom Kiely. Paddy Ryan
Patrick Ryan (15 March 1851 – 14 December 1900) was an Irish American boxer, and became the bare-knuckle American heavyweight champion on May 30, 1880, after he won the title from Joe Goss. He retained the title until losing it to the exceptional John L. Sullivan on February 7, 1882. Ryan fought only ten major bouts, but as many as twenty-five exhibitions including many Sullivan in his late career. Exhibitions brought him income, but with fewer rounds and less risk. Early life and career Ryan was born in Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland on March 14, 1851. After moving to America, he lived in the Troy, New York area and was consequently nicknamed the "Trojan Giant". Patrick Finbar Ryan, TC, O.P., (1881-1975) was an Irish Dominican priest who served as Archbishop of Port of Spain, Trinidad (1940–1966). Patrick Ryan was born in Rochestown, County Cork, the son of Edward Ryan, and Matilda Ryan. on 4 March 1881. He was initially educated at Christian Brothers College, Cork, and Clongowes Wood College. He then entered St. Mary's Priory, Tallaght to become a Dominican. At St. Mary's, he also studied at University College Dublin, Royal University of Ireland, and subsequently moved to study at Sapienza University of Rome. Loyola Jesuit College is a private Catholic secondary boarding school, located in Gidan Mangoro, Abuja, Nigeria. The school was founded by the Society of Jesus on October 2, 1996, and is named after the Society's founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola. Patrick Ryan (Irish Priest)
Patrick Ryan is an Irish Catholic priest who left the Pallottine order in 1973 after refusing a transfer to a parish church in England. In 1988 Ryan was accused by British authorities of involvement in Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) activity, and was the subject of two unsuccessful extradition requests. Ryan denied the accusation in an interview with ''The Tipperary Star'', saying that he had raised money both inside and outside Europe for victims on the nationalist side in the Troubles of Northern Ireland. But Ryan insisted that he had "never bought explosives for the IRA or anybody else", and had never been requested by the paramilitary group to do so. In an interview with the BBC broadcast in 2019, Ryan admitted that he was "one hundred percent" involved in IRA bomb-making. Patrick Joseph "Paddy" Ryan (1904 – 1969), an Australian Catholic priest and anti-communist organiser, was born in Albury, New South Wales in 1904.
