Patrick Pigneter
Patrick Pigneter (born 19 July 1987) is an Italian luger who has competed since 2007. A natural track luger, he won nine medals at the FIL World Luge Natural Track Championships with four golds (Men's singles: 2009, Men's doubles: 2009, Mixed team: 2009, 2011), two silvers (Men's doubles: 2011, Mixed team: 2007), and three bronzes (Men's singles: 2005, 2007, 2011). Luge
A luge is a small one- or two-person sled on which one sleds supine (face up) and feet-first. A luger steers by using the calf muscles to flex the sled's runners or by exerting opposite shoulder pressure to the seat. Racing sleds weigh for singles and for doubles. Luge is also the name of an Olympic sport. Lugers can reach speeds of 140 km/h (87 mph). Austrian Manuel Pfister reached a top speed of 154 km/h (96 mph) on a track in Whistler, Canada, prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics. Lugers compete against a timer in one of the most precisely timed sports in the world—to one thousandth of a second on artificial tracks. FIL World Luge Championships 2009
The FIL World Luge Championships 2009 ran on 1–8 February 2009 at the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track in Lake Placid, New York, United States for the second time after having hosted the event in 1983. They were awarded the event at the 2006 FIL Congress in Berchtesgaden, Germany. Raimund Pigneter
Raimund Pigneter was an Italian luger who competed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A natural track luger, he won the gold medal in the men's doubles event at the 1980 FIL World Luge Natural Track Championships in Passeier, Italy. Pigneter also won two medals in the men's doubles event at the FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships with a gold in 1985 and a silver in 1983. The FIL World Luge Natural Track Championships 2009 took place 12–15 February 2009 in Moos, Italy. This was the second time the city hosted the event having done so in 1980. Event preparations Preparations for the track were inspected by World Cup champion Patrick Pigneter and local hero Evelyn Lanthaler. Infrastructure improvements at the finish area were improved, including enlargement of the parking lot. Both athletes were impressed with the venue itself even without it being iced. The FIL European Luge Natural Track Championships 2008 was held 15–17 February in Olang, Italy. The Italians won the most medals in this event with five despite not winning any of the three events.
