Patrick Moutal
Patrick Moutal is a French sitarist and musicologist. He has been teaching north Indian classical music at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMDP) since 1984 (Jazz & Improvised Musics and Pedagogy dpts). Biography Born in Lyon in 1951, he went to India at age 18 in order to study Hindustani classical music. He learned Hindi and settled in Banaras (Varanasi), where he stayed for 14 years. In 1970, he was admitted as a sitar student at the Faculty of Performing Arts of Banaras Hindu University. Under the guidance of Dr K.C. Gangrade and Pt Lalmani Misra, he completed the following degrees : - Diploma 1973 - Bachelor's Degree with Gold Medal in 1976 - Master's Degree with Omkarnath Thakur Prize in 1978 - Master's Degree in French language in 1979 - Doctorate of Performance & Compositions in 1983 The year of his doctorate, he wrote two books in English about ragas (cf Bibliography). The sitar ( or ; ) is a plucked stringed instrument, originating from the Indian subcontinent, used in Hindustani classical music. The instrument was invented in medieval India, flourished in the 18th century, and arrived at its present form in 19th-century India. Maurice Fleuret (22 June 1932 – 22 March 1990) was a French composer, music journalist, radio producer, arts administrator, and festival organizer. Biography Born in La Talaudière in the département of Loire, Maurice Fleuret received his secondary education at the École normale d'instituteurs in Montbrison. In 1952 he moved to Paris and began studying music in the classes of Norbert Dufourcq, Olivier Messiaen, and Roland Manuel at the Conservatoire de Paris, graduating in 1956. A ''raga'' or ''raag'' (; also ''raaga'' or ''ragam''; ) is a melodic framework for improvisation in Indian classical music akin to a melodic mode. The ''rāga'' is a unique and central feature of the classical Indian music tradition, and as a result has no direct translation to concepts in classical European music. Each ''rāga'' is an array of melodic structures with musical motifs, considered in the Indian tradition to have the ability to "colour the mind" and affect the emotions of the audience.
