Patrick McKerron
Brigadier Sir Patrick Alexander Bruce McKerron, known as Patrick McKerron (6 May 1896 – 20 March 1964) was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. He joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1920 as Assistant Superintendent before retiring as Colonial Secretary of Singapore in 1950. Early years and education Patrick McKerron was educated in Fettes College and Aberdeen University. Career Military career During the First World War, McKerron was with the 4th Battalion, The Gordon Highlanders in France, where he was wounded in 1917. He was transferred to Indian Army servicing with the 20th Punjab Regiment in the Punjab and on the North West Frontier. Civil career Prior to Second World War McKerron joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1920 was appointed as acting Assistant Superintendent in the Monopolies Department (Singapore). 20th Punjab Infantry
The 20th Duke of Cambridge's Own Infantry (Brownlow's Punjabis) was a regiment of the British Indian Army. It was raised in 1857, as the 8th Regiment of Punjab Infantry. It was designated as the 20th Duke of Cambridge's Own Infantry (Brownlow's Punjabis) in 1904 and became 2nd Battalion (Duke of Cambridge's Own) 14th Punjab Regiment in 1922. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Ralph Hone
Major General Sir Herbert Ralph Hone (3 May 1896 – 28 November 1992) was a British Army officer, barrister and colonial administrator. Life up to World War II Ralph Hone was born in Hove, Sussex, and was educated at Varndean Grammar School, Brighton. Hone's mother died while he was in his teens; his father, "a man of character", went on to become mayor of Brighton in 1937. His family, the Hones, were distant relations to Nathaniel Hone the Elder of the famous painting, writing, cricket and diplomatic dynasty the Hones. However, Ralph's upbringing was far removed from that of his forebears. In April 1915 Hone passed the British civil service examination. He then joined the Inns of Court Regiment and was commissioned in July 1915 in the London Irish Rifles. He was posted to the 1/18th battalion and was involved in the Battle of Loos in autumn 1915. British Military Administration (Malaya)
The British Military Administration (BMA) was the interim administrator of British Malaya from August 1945, the end of World War II, to the establishment of the Malayan Union in April 1946. The BMA was under the direct command of the Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia, Lord Louis Mountbatten. The administration had the dual function of maintaining basic subsistence during the period of reoccupation, and also of imposing the state structure upon which post-war imperial power would rest. North-West Frontier Province (1901–2010)
The North-West Frontier Province (NWFP; ps, شمال لویدیځ سرحدي ولایت, ) was a Chief Commissioner's Province of British India, established on 9 November 1901 from the north-western districts of the Punjab Province. Following the referendum in 1947 to join either Pakistan or India, the province voted hugely in favour of joining Pakistan and it acceded accordingly on 14th August, 1947.
