Patrick Kuru
Patrick Kuru is a Cook Island former professional rugby league footballer who played as a forward in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. He played at representative level for the Cook Islands, and at club level for the Bay of Plenty Stags and the Altona Roosters. Playing career Kuru played for the Bay of Plenty Stags in the 1996 Lion Red Cup, scoring two tries in the semi-final defeat by Waikato. As of 2010, Kuru plays for the Altona Roosters in the Victorian Rugby League competition. Kuru captained the squad to the 2010 title. He was chosen in an Australian Affiliated national side in 2005, representing Victoria. The Bay of Plenty rugby league team (also known as the Bay of Plenty Lakers) are a New Zealand rugby league team who represents the Bay of Plenty Rugby League in New Zealand Rugby League competitions. Between 1994 and 1996 they competed in the Lion Red Cup competition, while in 2008 and 2009 they competed in the Bartercard Premiership. History Early Efforts In 1921 former New Zealand international George Iles moved from Auckland to live in Tauranga. In 1922 he was part of an effort to establish rugby league in the Tauranga area. The Tauranga Rugby League was started in March, 1922 and they looked to play rugby league teams from other areas. They made efforts to organise a game with the newly formed Rotorua league team. New Zealand Māori rugby league team is a rugby league representative side made up of New Zealand Māori players. The side represents the New Zealand Māori Rugby league. Like its union counterpart, the rugby league team previously competed in international competitions. With some controversy, the team participated in the 2000 World Cup as Aotearoa Māori. The Super League International Board had agreed to give a place in their World Cup to the New Zealand Māori team as they attempted to gain allies during the Super League war. The Cook Islands national rugby league team have represented the Cook Islands in international rugby league football since 1986. Administered by the Cook Islands Rugby League Association (CIRLA), the team has competed at two Rugby League World Cups, in 2000 and 2013, and are coached by Tony Iro.
