Patrick Johnston (Canadian Politician)
Patrick Johnston is a Canadian administrator, policy analyst and former politician. He was recruited by Liberal Party leader John Turner to contest the 1988 election for the party, but unexpectedly lost his nomination to a rival candidate supported by anti-abortion activists. A teacher and social worker from Toronto, Johnston served for six years as leader of the National Anti-Poverty Organization. Originally a member of the New Democratic Party, he joined the Liberals in 1984 after charging the NDP with lacking a coherent economic policy. He served as senior advisor to Ontario Premier David Peterson's Social Assistance Review Committee, and was co-chair of the federal Liberal Party's election committee in 1988. Despite strong support from the party establishment, he lost the Liberal nomination in Scarborough West to a little-known Toronto lawyer named Tom Wappel, 523 votes to 372. Patrick Johnston (American Politician)
Patrick Johnston (born September 3, 1946) is an American politician who served as a member of the California State Assembly from 1981 until 1991 and California State Senate from 1991 until 2000, primarily representing San Joaquin County. Early life and education Johnston was born in San Francisco, California. He attended high school at St. Joseph's College in Mountain View, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Patrick's Seminary and University, followed by a Master of Arts degree in political representation from California State University, Sacramento. Career Johnston began his career as an accident report clerk for the San Francisco Municipal Railway. He then worked as a probation officer in San Francisco and Calaveras County, California. Remaining in Calaveras County, Johnston became active in local Democratic politics, and became friends with John Garamendi. "I that in Heill wes and Gladnes", also known as "The Lament for the Makaris", is a poem in the form of a danse macabre by the Scottish poet William Dunbar. Every fourth line repeats the Latin refrain ''timor mortis conturbat me'' (fear of death troubles me), a litanic phrase from the Office of the Dead. Apart from its literary quality, the poem is notable for the list of makars it contains, some of whom are historically attestable as poets only from Dunbar's testimony in this work. After listing Lydgate, Gower and Chaucer, the makars invoked are Scottish. All but two are cited as having died by the time of the composition. The two exceptions are the courtier Patrick Johnston and known poet Walter Kennedy, the latter of whom died ''circa'' 1508. From internal evidence, the lament is generally thought to have been composed c.1505. Most of the names can be traced to either the fourteenth or fifteenth centuries. Patrick Johnston (Scottish Politician)
Sir Patrick Johnston (1650–1736) of Edinburgh was a Scottish merchant and politician who sat in the Parliament of Scotland from 1702 to 1707 and as a Whig in the British House of Commons between 1707 and 1713. He was Lord Provost of Edinburgh three times from 1700 to 1702, from 1704 to 1706, and from 1708 to 1710. Early life Johnstone was a younger son of Joseph Johnstone of Hilton, Berwickshire (near Whitsome) and his wife Mary Douglas, daughter of Sir Robert Douglas of Blackerstone, Berwickshire. He was apprenticed to an Edinburgh merchant in 1677 and became burgess of Edinburgh in 1684. He married Margaret Kynnear (Kinnear) on 9 June 1684. He became involved in local politics in Edinburgh, and was a merchant councilor in 1694 and bailie in 1695. In 1695 he was one of the 30 men who set up the "Company of Scotland Trading in Africa and the Indies" generally just called the Company of Scotland.
