Patrick Hughes (politician)
Patrick Hughes (March 26, 1831 – March 24, 1899) was an Irish-born merchant and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Niagara in the House of Commons of Canada from 1878 to 1879 as a Liberal member. He was born in Newry, County Down, the son of Bernard Hughes and Anne Fegan, and came to Toronto with his family in 1847. Hughes entered the dry goods business with his brother Bernard under the combined name of Hughes Brothers. He was married twice: to Mary Eliza Donohoe in 1857 and to Margaret Louise Sheridan in 1876. Hughes served as a member of Toronto city council in 1877 and 1878. He was elected to the House of Commons in the 1878 federal election for the riding of Niagara, defeating the incumbent Josiah Burr Plumb Josiah Burr Plumb (25 March 1816 – 12 March 1888) was an American-born Canadian businessman and parliamentarian. Patrick Hughes (tennis)
George Patrick Hughes (21 December 1902 – 8 May 1997) was an English tennis player. Hughes and Fred Perry won the doubles at the French Open, French Championships in 1933 and at the Australian Open, Australian Championships in 1934. Hughes later teamed up with Raymond Tuckey. They won the doubles in The Championships, Wimbledon, Wimbledon in 1936. Hughes reached the semi finals at French Open, Roland Garros in 1931, where he beat Vernon Kirby and George Lott before losing to Christian Boussus. Between 1929 and 1936 Hughes was a member of the British Davis Cup team. Hughes had been the only British man to reach the singles final at the Rome Masters, Italian championships, capturing the title in 1931 and runner-up the following year, until Andy Murray won the tournament in 2016. Patrick Hughes (born 20 October 1939) is a British artist working in London. He is the creator of "reverspective", an optical illusion on a three-dimensional surface where the parts of the picture which seem farthest away are actually physically the nearest. Life Patrick Hughes was born in Birmingham, attended school in Kingston upon Hull and went on at the James Graham Day College in Leeds in 1959. Later he taught at the Leeds College of Art before becoming an independent artist. He has three sons by his first wife, Rennie Paterson, and was later married to the author Molly Parkin. Lewis Patrick Hughes (10 April 1943 – 19 February 2022), also known as Podge Hughes, was an Irish cricketer and maths teacher at Mount Temple Comprehensive School. A right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler, he played thirteen times for the Ireland cricket team between 1965 and 1978 including five first-class matches. Playing career Hughes made his debut for Ireland against Hampshire in September 1965 in a first-class match. It was very much a poor start to his international career, as he scored a duck in each innings and only took one wicket, and he did not play for Ireland again for almost three years. Biography Patrick Henry Hughes was born March 10, 1988, to Patrick John and Patricia Hughes. Upon his delivery, the medical staff noticed physical anomalies. These were diagnosed as bilateral anophthalmia with pterygium syndrome and congenital bilateral hip dysplasia. His father, Patrick John Hughes, introduced him to the piano at the age of nine months.
