Patrick Hues Mell
Patrick Hues Mell (July 19, 1814 – January 26, 1888) was the president of the Southern Baptist Convention in two terms from 1863 to 1871 and from 1880 to 1887. He also served as chancellor of the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens from 1878 until his resignation in 1888. (The head of the university was referred to as chancellor instead of president, from 1860 until 1932). Education and early life Mell was born in Walthourville, Georgia, in 1814. He studied at local institutions until he entered Amherst College in 1833 at the age of 19. He studied there for two years but did not graduate with his class. By 1841 Mell had obtained a position at Mercer University as a professor of ancient languages. In 1856 he took a similar position at the University of Georgia. North Georgia College & State University was an institution of higher education that began as a branch of the Georgia College of Agriculture and Mechanical at the University of Georgia in 1873. It was merged in 2013 with Gainesville State College to create the University of North Georgia. North Georgia Agricultural College 1871–1929 Early history (1871–1900) North Georgia Agricultural College officially opened classes in January 1873. Its inception was the result of Morrill Act and the efforts of William Pierce Price. Funds from the Morrill Act were given to the University of Georgia which established the Georgia College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts in 1872. Price, a politician and native of Dahlonega, persuaded the regents to establish a branch of the college. The school's main building was the old federal mint located near the square in Dahlonega. James Petigru Boyce (January 11, 1827 – December 28, 1888) was an American pastor, theologian, professor and chaplain who was one of the founders of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Biography Early life James Petigru Boyce was born in 1827. He was educated at Brown University under Francis Wayland, whose evangelical sermons contributed to Boyce's conversion, and at Princeton Theological Seminary under Charles Hodge who led Boyce to appreciate Calvinistic theology. Career After completing studies at Princeton, he served as pastor of the Columbia S.C. Baptist Church and as a faculty member at Furman University. Richard Fuller (April 22, 1804 – October 20, 1876) was an American Baptist minister and one of the founders of the Southern Baptist movement. Early life Richard Fuller was born on April 22, 1804, in Beaufort, South Carolina. He received his early instruction from Dr. William T. Brautly. At the age of seventeen, Fuller entered Harvard University in Massachusetts.
