Patrick H. Drewry
Patrick Henry Drewry (May 24, 1875 – December 21, 1947) was a Virginia lawyer and Democratic politician who served in the United States House of Representatives and state senate. Early life and education Born in Petersburg, Virginia, as one of the three surviving sons of Dr. Emmett Arrington Drewry (1838–1891) and his second wife, the former Altazera Laughton of Petersburg. His maternal grandfather was Patrick Henry Booth Sr. of Surry County, Virginia. His paternal grandfather, James Drewry (1808–1878) was a major landowner in Southampton County, Virginia, and the town of Drewryville, Virginia was named for the family. His father had enlisted in the 9th Virginia Infantry as a surgeon shortly after graduating from medical school, but mostly served at Poplar Lawn hospital in Petersburg, then was assigned to North Carolina late in the war. Petersburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,458. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines Petersburg (along with the city of Colonial Heights) with Dinwiddie County for statistical purposes. The city is south of the commonwealth (state) capital city of Richmond. 9th Virginia Infantry
The 9th Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia. The 9th Virginia completed its organization at Portsmouth, Virginia, in July, 1861. Its members were from Portsmouth and the counties of Roanoke, Chesterfield, Isle of Wight, Nansemond, Lunenburg, Dinwiddie, and Norfolk. The regiment served in the Department of Norfolk and in June, 1862, totalled 435 men. During the war it was attached to General Armistead's, Barton's, and Steuart's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It fought in many conflicts from Seven Pines to Gettysburg and after serving in North Carolina participated in the Battle of Drewry's Bluff. Blandford Cemetery
Blandford Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Petersburg, Virginia. The oldest stone, marking the grave of Richard Yarbrough, reads 1702. It is located adjacent to the People's Memorial Cemetery, a historic African-American cemetery. Francis Rives Lassiter (February 18, 1866 – October 31, 1909) was a U.S. Representative from Virginia, great-nephew of Francis E. Rives. Biography Francie Rives Lassiter was born in Petersburg, Virginia on September 29, 1867, a son of Dr. Daniel W. Lassiter and Anna Rives (Heath) Lassiter. His siblings included William Lassiter, who was a career United States Army officer and attained the rank of major general. Lassiter attended McCabe's University School at Petersburg and was graduated from the law department of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1886. William Lassiter
William Lassiter (September 29, 1867- March 29, 1959) was a career in the United States Army. He was a veteran of the Spanish–American War, Occupation of Veracruz, World War I, and Occupation of the Rhineland and attained the rank of major general. A native of Petersburg, Virginia, Lassiter graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1889 and began a career in the Army's Field Artillery Branch. His initial assignments included coastal forts in New York and California. During the Spanish–American War, he served in Cuba and took part in the Siege of Santiago, for which he was awarded the Silver Star. He subsequently served on the West Point faculty and carried out several years of temporary duty with the Inspector General, including postings to Cuba and the Philippines. Byrd Organization
The Byrd machine, or Byrd organization, was a political machine of the Democratic Party led by former Governor and U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd (1887–1966) that dominated Virginia politics for much of the 20th century. From the 1890s until the late 1960s, the Byrd organization effectively controlled the politics of the state through a network of courthouse cliques of local constitutional officers in most of the state's counties. "The organization" had its greatest strength in rural areas. Palmyra is a city in and the county seat of Marion County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,595 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hannibal Micropolitan Statistical Area.
