Patrick Compton
Patrick Mark Denis Compton (born 28 November 1952) is a South African journalist and retired cricketer. Background He played for Middlesex 2nd XI against Sussex 2nd XI as a batsman in 1968. He later played for Natal in three first-class matches in the Howa Bowl in 1979/1980. He scored 97 runs (average 19.40) with a personal best of 52. The second son of the cricketer and footballer Denis Compton (through his second marriage), he was brought up with his younger brother Richard by their mother Valerie in South Africa. His son, Ben Ben is frequently used as a shortened version of the given names Benjamin, Benedict, Bennett or Benson, and is also a given name in its own right. Denis Compton
Denis Charles Scott Compton (23 May 1918 β 23 April 1997) was an English multi-sportsman. As a cricketer he played in 78 Test matches and spent his whole cricket career with Middlesex. As a footballer, he played as a winger and spent most of his career at Arsenal. A right-handed batsman and left-arm unorthodox spin bowler, Compton is regularly credited as one of England's most remarkable batsmen. Indeed, Sir Don Bradman said he was one of the greatest cricket players he'd ever seen. He is one of only twenty-five players to have scored over one hundred centuries in first-class cricket. Leslie Compton
Leslie Harry Compton (12 September 1912 β 27 December 1984) was an English sportsman who played football and cricket for Arsenal and Middlesex, respectively. He gained two England caps late in his football career, and remains the oldest outfield player to debut for England (and the oldest post-war debutant in any position). His brother, Denis, was also a footballer and cricketer for Arsenal and Middlesex, though Leslie was more successful in football and Denis in cricket. Richard Compton (cricketer)
Richard Cecil Denis Compton (born 29 March 1956) is a retired South African cricketer. Compton was the third son of the English Test cricketer Denis Compton, Denis's second son with his second wife Valerie Platt. He was born in London and brought up in South Africa from 1960. A right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler, he represented Natal in seven first-class matches in the Howa Bowl, five in 1978/79 and two in 1980/81. He scored 99 runs at an average of 9.00 and took eighteen wickets at an average of 22.11, with best bowling figures of 3/42 in the first innings against Western Province in February 1979. His brother Patrick also played first-class cricket for Natal, and his uncle Leslie, Denis's brother, played for Middlesex (and for Arsenal and England at football). Benjamin Garnet Compton (born 29 March 1994) is an English cricketer. He is the only son of the cricketer Patrick Compton and a grandson of the cricketer-footballer Denis Compton. He made his first-class debut on 16 September 2019, for Nottinghamshire in the 2019 County Championship. Nick Compton
Nicholas Richard Denis Compton (born 26 June 1983) is a South African-born English former Test and first-class cricketer who most recently played for Middlesex County Cricket Club. The grandson of Denis Compton, he represented England in 16 Test matches. A right-handed top order batsman and occasional right-arm off spin bowler, he made his List-A debut for Middlesex in 2001 and made his first-class debut three years later. A move to Somerset in 2010 saw Compton establish himself as a consistent scorer in a strong top order and following a prolific domestic season he made his England Test debut against India in November 2012. Natal Cricket Team
KwaZulu-Natal (formerly Natal) is the first-class cricket team that represents the province of KwaZulu-Natal (formerly Natal) in South Africa. For the purposes of the Sunfoil Series, KwaZulu-Natal is the only team that has not merged with another and it has played in the SuperSport Series (as it was named then) as the Dolphins since October 2004. However, the KwaZulu-Natal Inland cricket team was granted first-class status in 2006, began competing in the CSA Provincial Competitions in 2006-2007, and also represented by the Dolphins franchise. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Transvaal Cricket Team
Gauteng (formerly Transvaal) is the first-class cricket team of the southern parts of Gauteng province of South Africa. The team was called ''Transvaal'' from April 1890 to April 1997 (the area north of Johannesburg, including Pretoria being part of the Northerns, formerly ''Northern Transvaal''). Under the main competition's various names – the Currie Cup, then the Castle Cup, now the SuperSport Series – Transvaal/Gauteng cricket team has been the most successful of the South African domestic sides, winning 25 times. Eastern Province Cricket Team
Eastern Province cricket team was the former team that represented the Eastern Province in domestic first-class cricket in South Africa, alongside one-day matches. Eastern Province played first-class cricket from 1893β94 to 2004β05, when the team was merged with neighbouring team Border to form the entirely professional franchise the Warriors. From 2004β05 the former provincial teams, such as Eastern Province, were allocated two CSA Provincial Competitions that they could participate in: the CSA 3-Day Cup and the CSA One-Day Cup. Although given first-class status, these competitions were to be only semi-professional and no longer represented the top level of domestic cricket in South Africa. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Howa Bowl
The Howa Bowl was a first-class cricket competition in South Africa that ran from the 1972β73 to 1990β91 cricket seasons. Originally known as the Dadabhay Trophy, it was contested between Eastern Province, Natal, Transvaal and Western Province. The Howa Bowl was run during South Africa's exclusion from international cricket due to apartheid, and was limited to non-white players, who were not permitted to compete in the Currie Cup. It was organised by the South African Cricket Board, with the matches being played over three days. The pitches used in the competition were poor quality, which is highlighted by the fact that a team passed 400 in an innings just six times, while falling for under 100 on 87 occasions.
