Patricia Deveaux
Patricia Ann Deveaux (born 1968) is a Bahamian Progressive Liberal Party politician serving as Speaker of the House of Assembly and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bamboo Town. She is the second woman to hold the position of Speaker after Italia Johnson. Career Deveuax served as a Senior Executive Secretary in the Ministry of National Security for 30 years. She also served as National Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party, PLP Chairman of the Kennedy constituency and PLP Chairman of Bamboo Town constituency. Philip Davis (Bahamian Politician)
Philip Edward "Brave" Davis (born 7 June 1951) is a Bahamian politician serving as the Prime Minister of the Bahamas since 2021. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cat Island, Rum Cay & San Salvador since May 2002. Davis was Deputy Prime Minister to Perry Christie and Minister of Public Works and Urban Development from 2012 to 2017. He then served as Leader of the Opposition from May 2017 to September 2021, when he led the Progressive Liberal Party to victory and was subsequently sworn in as Prime Minister. Early life Davis was born in a house off Wulff Road, the eldest of eight children to Dorothy (née Smith), a domestic worker from Alexander, Great Exuma and Brave Edward Davis, a firefighter from Old Bight, Cat Island. Renward Wells
Renward Ricardo Wells (born 23 February 1970) is a Bahamian politician and retired sprinter who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bamboo Town from 2012 to 2021. In sprinting, he specialized in the 100 metres. He competed at the Carifta Games in 1986 in Guadeloupe where he won a bronze medal in the 400 meters. He also competed in Carifta Jamaica 1988 and in Barbados in 1989. In May 1989 Wells helped the Boise State University Broncos to their first Track and field Big Sky Conference title in 22 years. He competed at the Olympic Games in 1996 and 2000 and the World Championships in 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001 without reaching the finals. His personal best time was 10.18 seconds, achieved at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg. Wells also co-holds the Bahamian national record in the 4 x 100 metres relay, achieved with teammates Dominic Demeritte, Iram Lewis and Andrew Tynes. Progressive Liberal Party
The Progressive Liberal Party (abbreviated PLP) is a populist and social liberal party in the Bahamas. Philip Davis is the leader of the party. History The PLP was founded in 1953 by William Cartwright, Cyril Stevenson, and Henry Milton Taylor. The PLP was the first national political party in the Bahamas. The party governed for 25 straight years from 1967 to 1992, as well as from 2002 to 2007 and 2012 to 2017. Leading the party to its first victory in 1967 was Lynden Pindling, the country's first Prime Minister. Perry Christie was Prime Minister of the Bahamas between 2 May 2002 and the 2007 general elections when the party was defeated by the rival Free National Movement (FNM) which won 23 seats. 2021 Bahamian General Election
General elections were held in the Bahamas on 16 September 2021 to elect all 38 members of the House of Assembly. Around two hours after the polls closed, and results started to trickle in, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis conceded defeat, after results showed his party Free National Movement losing several seats they previously held. Since 1997, every election has resulted in a change of government. On 17 September Philip Davis of the Progressive Liberal Party was sworn in as prime minister. Background The Bahamas has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Biometric cards are expected to be used. In January 2021, it was reported that the PLP was expecting an early election. Free National Movement
The Free National Movement (abbreviated FNM) is a political party in The Bahamas formed in the early 1970s, led by Sir Cecil Wallace Whitfield. The current leader of the party is Michael Pintard and his deputy Peter Turnquest. It dominated the general election held on 10 May 2017, winning 35 of the 39 seats in the Legislature, but was defeated in 2021, losing 28 seats. History The FNM was established at Jimmy Shepherd's house on Spring Hills Farms in Fox Hill in 1971. The Free-PLP were a breakaway group of eight MPs from the then governing Progressive Liberal Party.
