Patrice Carpentier is a French professional sailor born on 10 January 1950 in Falaise, Calvados. He holds a BA in letters. Married with four children, he lives in La Trinidad-sur-Mer. He writes for Race Au Large and SeaHorse Magazine. He became race director for the 2018 Golden Globe race. Falaise, Calvados
Falaise () is a commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. Geography Falaise lies on the river Ante, a tributary of the river Dives, about southeast of Caen. History The area around Falaise has been inhabited from prehistoric times, but it was only at the end of the prehistoric period and the beginning of the Gallo-Roman era that the area, Falaise in particular, was regularly inhabited. Evidence of settlement from the time has been found at Vaston, an agricultural area just north-east of the modern town. Falaise, as it is sited today, probably came into being around the castle. The town was the birthplace of William the Conqueror, first of the Norman Kings of England. The Solitaire du Figaro, previously called the Course de l'Aurore, is a solo multi-stage sailing race created in 1970 by Jean-Louis Guillemard and . The unique character of the race, the presence of great solo sailors and its being open to amateurs, has made it one of the most cherished races in French sailing. History From 1970 to 1979 the race was organised by the newspaper ''L'Aurore''. In 1980 the daily newspaper ''Le Figaro'' bought out ''L'Aurore'' and became the principal sponsor of the event. From 2003, the eyewear company was an associate sponsor. The official name of the race became ''La Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro''.
