AS Carcassonne
Association Sportive of Carcassonne are a semi-professional rugby league football club based in Carcassonne in the region of Occitania (administrative region), Occitanie in the south of France. They play in the French Elite One Championship and are one of the most successful clubs in French rugby league, having won a total of eleven French rugby league championship titles and fourteen Lord Derby Cups. The club was founded in 1938 and to date has produced debatably the best ever French Rugby league footballer in Puig Aubert. The club plays its home matches at the Stade Albert Domec. The France national rugby league team represent France in international rugby league matches. They are referred to as ''les Chanticleers'' or less commonly as ''les Tricolores''. The team is run under the auspices of the Fédération Française de Rugby à XIII. The French rugby league team first played in 1934 on a tour of England. They have taken part in all World Cups, 16 in total, with the first being held in 1954 in France. They have never won the title but finished runners-up in both 1954 and 1968. These are often considered the glory years of French rugby league as from the 1950s to the 1970s the team were strong and regularly beat Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain. Gilbert Benausse (born 21 January 1932 in Carcassonne – died 24 November 2006 in Carcassonne) was a French rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s and 1960s. René Benausse
René Benausse (born 23 September 1929 in Carcassonne – died 29 November 2013 in Villalier) was a French rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s. He played at the international level for France, and at club level for AS Carcassonne and FC Lézignan XIII playing at . He is the older brother of fellow rugby league footballer Gilbert Benausse, alongside which he played for Lézignan. Playing career At club level, Benausse played first for AS Carcassonne, and then for FC Lézignan XIII. He was capped twice for France and took part at the 1960 Rugby League World Cup.
