Patara Alaverdi
Patara Alaverdi ( ka, პატარა ალავერდი; ''Minor Alaverdi'') is a Georgian Orthodox Church located in Qakh District, northwestern Azerbaijan, on the border with Georgia. Patara Alaverdi is a domed church erected on the site of an old basilica with the contribution of the local community in 1888. Tradition has it that Minor Alaverdi is "a brother to Alaverdi Monastery of Kakheti". At present, the dome is damaged and in need of restoration. Each year on 14 September, it hosts Alaverdoba, a feast with traditions identical with that of Kakhetian Alaverdi. Qakh District
Qakh District ( az, Qax rayonu; ka, კახის რაიონი, K′akhis raioni; Tsakhur: Къахын район) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the north of the country and belongs to the Shaki-Zagatala Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Zagatala, Shaki, Samukh, Yevlakh, and the Russian Republic of Dagestan. Its capital and largest city is Qakh. As of 2020, the district had a population of 57,200. Geography The region is dominated by hot and subtropical climate. However mountainous areas are rather cold. In Ancient Roman architecture, a basilica is a large public building with multiple functions, typically built alongside the town's forum. The basilica was in the Latin West equivalent to a stoa in the Greek East. The building gave its name to the architectural form of the basilica. Alaverdi Monastery
Alaverdi Monastery ( ka, ალავერდის მონასტერი) is a Georgian Eastern Orthodox monastery located from Akhmeta, in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia. While parts of the monastery date back to 6th century, the present day cathedral was built in the 11th century by Kvirike III of Kakheti, replacing an older church of St. George. It is considered one of the four Great Cathedrals of the Georgian Orthodox world. History The monastery was founded by the Assyrian monk Joseph (Yoseb, Amba) Alaverdeli, who came from Antioch and settled in Alaverdi, then a small village and former pagan religious center dedicated to the Moon. Kakheti
Kakheti ( ka, კახეთი ''K’akheti''; ) is a region (mkhare) formed in the 1990s in eastern Georgia from the historical province of Kakheti and the small, mountainous province of Tusheti. Telavi is its capital. The region comprises eight administrative districts: Telavi, Gurjaani, Qvareli, Sagarejo, Dedoplistsqaro, Signagi, Lagodekhi and Akhmeta. Alaverdoba
Alaverdoba ( ka, ალავერდობა) is a religious and folk celebration in the eastern Georgian province of Kakheti, with its roots in a harvest festival. It focuses on Alaverdi Cathedral from which it derives its name, with the suffix –''oba'' designating attribution. The festival lasts for several days, climaxing on 28 September, the feast day of St. Joseph of Alaverdi of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers, the 6th-century founder of the cathedral. Historically Alaverdoba lasted for three weeks in a three-step cycle, reflecting pre-Christian cults related to the Moon. In the 19th century, a tradition of agricultural fair was added to the festival. Kurmukhi Church
The Kurmukhi Church of St. George ( ka, ქურმუხის წმინდა გიორგის ეკლესია, az, Kürmük məbədi) is a Georgian Orthodox Church located in the Qakh District of Azerbaijan. The church is believed to be constructed in 12th century, when the Kingdom of Georgia experienced a political, economical and cultural golden age. its name is first mentioned in Georgian Gospel, which dates back to the fourteenth century, 1310, that notes it under jurisdiction of Georgian Orthodox church. The old church, however was destroyed as a result of Shah Abbas I's invasions of Georgia and was rebuilt only in 1890, by the archimandrite Leonid (then Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia). The monastery is currently inactive. St George's Church, Qakh
The St George's Church ( ka, კახის წმინდა გიორგის ეკლესია) is a Georgian Orthodox Church located in the village of Gakh-Inguila in the Qakh district, 30 metres away from the left bank of the Kakistskali river, northwestern Azerbaijan, on the border with Georgia, where the Ingiloy Georgians live compactly (about 7,500 people). The church was destroyed as a result of Shah Abbas I's invasions of Georgia, but later was reconstructed on the site of an old church in the first half of the 18th century.
