Pat Boland
Patrick Henry Boland (October 12, 1906 - July 2, 1971) was a head coach in the AAFC for one season in 1946. He was the interim coach for the Chicago Rockets. He was also a line coach at Iowa. Early life Boland was born on October 12, 1906, in Duluth, Minnesota. He went to college at Minnesota. College coaching career He was a Freshmen coach at Minnesota in 1932. In 1937 he became a line coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was the coach there from 1937 to 1942. Professional coaching career In 1946 he became the line coach for the Chicago Rockets of the AAFC. He became the interim coach a few weeks later. As a coach he had a 2-3-1 record. Later life He later became a recruiter for the University of Iowa and the University of Miami. He died at 64 in 1971. The Iowa Hawkeyes football program represents the University of Iowa in college football. The Hawkeyes compete in the West division of the Big Ten Conference. Chicago Rockets
The Chicago Rockets were an American football team that played in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) from 1946 to 1949. During the 1949 season, the team was known as the Chicago Hornets. Unlike the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and Baltimore Colts, the franchise did not join the National Football League (NFL) prior to the 1950 season. The Chicago Rockets franchise was owned by Chicago trucking executive John L. "Jack" Keeshin, president of the National Jockey Club that owned and operated Sportsman's Park race track in Cicero, Illinois. 1946 AAFC Season
The 1946 AAFC season was the first season of the All-America Football Conference, a new professional league established to challenge the market dominance of the established National Football League. The league included eight teams, broken up into Eastern and Western divisions, which played a 14-game official schedule, culminating in a league championship game. The season is significant for its shattering of the color line in the ranks of professional American football, when black athletes Marion Motley and Bill Willis took to the field for the AAFC's Cleveland Browns on September 9, 1946. All-America Football Conference
The All-America Football Conference (AAFC) was a professional American football league that challenged the established National Football League (NFL) from 1946 to 1949. One of the NFL's most formidable challengers, the AAFC attracted many of the nation's best players, and introduced many lasting innovations to the game. However, the AAFC was ultimately unable to sustain itself in competition with the NFL. After it folded, three of its teams were admitted to the NFL: the San Francisco 49ers, the Cleveland Browns and the original Baltimore Colts (not to be confused with the later Baltimore Colts team, now the Indianapolis Colts).
