Pat Atencio
Pat Atencio, also called Koo Peen (English: "Mountain Rock"; January 22, 1932 – January 15, 2009), was a San Ildefonso Pueblo painter. Biography Pat Atencio was the son of Benjamin Atencio and painter Isabel M. Montoya. His mother's cousin was Maria Martinez. Isabel Montoya
Isabel M. Montoya Atencio (1899–1996) was a San Ildefonso Pueblo painter and potter. Biography Isabel M. Montoya was in 1899 and was the daughter of Nicolassa Peña Montoya and Juan Cruz Montoya. Her cousin was potter Maria Martinez. Her siblings included Rayita Montoya, Santana Montoya, and Alfredo Montoya (the first husband of Tonita Roybal). Montoya married Benjamin Atencio circa 1925 and had five children, all of whom were painters or potters: Tony, Gilbert Benjamin, Pat, Helen Gutierrez and Angelita Sanchez. Pueblo Artists
In the Southwestern United States, Pueblo (capitalized) refers to the Native tribes of Puebloans having fixed-location communities with permanent buildings which also are called pueblos (lowercased). The Spanish explorers of northern New Spain used the term ''pueblo'' to refer to permanent indigenous towns they found in the region, mainly in New Mexico and parts of Arizona, in the former province of Nuevo México. This term continued to be used to describe the communities housed in apartment structures built of stone, adobe mud, and other local material. The structures were usually multi-storied buildings surrounding an open plaza, with rooms accessible only through ladders raised/lowered by the inhabitants, thus protecting them from break-ins and unwanted guests. Gilbert Benjamin Atencio
Gilbert Benjamin Atencio, also called Wah Peen (English: Mountain of the Sacred Wind; 1930–1995), was a San Ildefonso Pueblo painter, potter, medical Illustrator, and politician. Early life and education Atencio was born in 1930 in Greeley, Colorado. He was the daughter of Benjamin Atencio and painter Isabel Montoya, who was a cousin of Maria Martinez. His brothers Pat Atencio and Tony Atencio were also artists, as were his sisters Helen Gutierrez and Angelita Sanchez. He studied at the San Ildefonso Day School and then at the Santa Fe Indian School, graduating in 1947. Career Known for his portraiture and portrayals of local ceremonies and customs, he has exhibited his work across the country. He was trained in the Studio style, and was initially interested in portraiture. An early success was his painting of his relatives Maria and Julian Martinez.
