Passions (Telemann)
Between 1716 and 1767, Georg Philipp Telemann wrote a series of ''Passions'', musical compositions reflecting on Christ's Passion – the physical, spiritual and mental suffering of Jesus from the hours prior to his trial through to his crucifixion. The works were written for performance in German churches in the days before Easter. A prolific composer, Telemann wrote over 40 ''Passions'' for the churches of Hamburg alone, of which 22 have survived according to the present state of research. He also wrote several Passion oratorios. Unlike the ''Passions'' intended for liturgical performance, they were not closely set to the literal text of the Gospels. Telemann Lukas-Passion
Georg Philipp Telemann (; – 25 June 1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of that city's five main churches. While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died less than two years after their marriage, and his second wife had extramarital affairs and accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving him. Recitative
Recitative (, also known by its Italian name "''recitativo''" ()) is a style of delivery (much used in operas, oratorios, and cantatas) in which a singer is allowed to adopt the rhythms and delivery of ordinary speech. Recitative does not repeat lines as formally composed songs do. It resembles sung ordinary speech more than a formal musical composition. Recitative can be distinguished on a continuum from more speech-like to more musically sung, with more sustained melodic lines. The mostly syllabic ''recitativo secco'' ("dry", accompanied only by continuo, typically cello and harpsichord) is at one end of the spectrum, through ''recitativo accompagnato'' (using orchestra), the more melismatic arioso, and finally the full-blown aria or ensemble, where the pulse is entirely governed by the music. Ulrich Leisinger
Ulrich Leisinger (born 1964 in Baden-Baden) is a German musicologist and director of the research department of the Mozarteum University Salzburg in Salzburg. Life Leisinger received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg in 1992. The subject of his dissertation was a paper on Joseph Haydn and the development of the classical piano style. He then went to the Bach Archive Leipzig until 2004, first as a research assistant and later as deputy director of research. In 2004/2005 Leisinger was a visiting professor at Cornell University in Ithaca. Since July 2005, Leisinger has been editor of the New Mozart Edition and the Digital Mozart Edition, published by the Mozarteum Foundation and funded by the Packard Humanities Institute, Los Altos, California. As Thomaskantor, Johann Sebastian Bach provided Passion music for Good Friday services in Leipzig. The extant ''St Matthew Passion'' and ''St John Passion'' are Passion oratorios composed by Bach. The ''Brockes Passion'', or ' (title in English: ''The Story of Jesus, Suffering and Dying for the Sins of the World''), is a German oratorio libretto by Barthold Heinrich Brockes, first published in 1712 and going through 30 or so editions in the next 15 years. Text Barthold Heinrich Brockes was an influential German poet who re-worked the traditional form of a Passion oratorio, adding reflective and descriptive poetry, sometimes of a highly-wrought and emotional kind, into the texture of his Passion. Barthold Heinrich Brockes
Barthold Heinrich Brockes (September 22, 1680 – January 16, 1747) was a German poet. He was born in Hamburg and educated at the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums. He studied jurisprudence at Halle, and after extensive travels in Italy, France and the Netherlands, settled in Hamburg in 1704. In 1720 he was appointed a member of the Hamburg senate, and entrusted with several important offices. Six years (from 1735 to 1741) he spent as ''Amtmann'' (bailiff) at Ritzebüttel. He died in Hamburg. Brockes' poetic works were published in a series of nine volumes under the fantastic title ''Irdisches Vergnügen in Gott'' (1721–1748); he also translated Giambattista Marino's ''La Strage degli innocenti'' (1715), Alexander Pope's ''Essay on Man'' (1740) and James Thomson's '' The Seasons'' (1745). ''Der Messias'', K. 572, is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 1789 German-language version of ''Messiah'', George Frideric Handel's 1741 oratorio. On the initiative of Gottfried van Swieten, Mozart adapted Handel's work for performances in Vienna. The libretto of Mozart's adaptation was largely based on Luther's translation of the Bible. Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (; 2 July 1724 – 14 March 1803) was a German poet. His best known work is the epic poem ''Der Messias'' ("The Messiah").
