Fanny Passavant
Fanny Juliet Passavant, FLA (16 October 1849 – 27 September 1944), was the first Librarian of the University of Leeds, in Leeds, England, having previously been librarian of its predecessor, the Yorkshire College. She was the only woman to hold a position of University Librarian when the college gained university status in 1904. Family Born in 1849, Passavant was a member of a family of Huguenot refugees who settled in Basel and Geneva in the 16th century. Her grandfather was (1751–1827), a pastor of the Reformed Church and childhood friend of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Career Passavant was appointed librarian of the Yorkshire College in Leeds in 1885. The college became the University of Leeds in 1904. Initially her role was expected to be clerical, but Passavant worked on the cataloguing and increasing the number of volumes. Johann David Passavant (18 September 1787 – 17 August 1861) was a German painter, curator and artist. Biography Passavant was born in 1787 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. His interest in the arts was evident by an early correspondence with the artist Franz Pforr (1788–1812). He moved to Paris in 1809 to further his business interests. He returned to Frankfurt in 1824 where art history evermore occupied his interest. His ''Tour of a German artist in England'' (1833 in German; 1836 translated into English by Lady Eastlake) remains a significant source for art historians, as do his catalogues of old master prints, whose numbering is still followed by some collections. In the year 1839 he became Inspektor (curator) of the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt. There he acquired important works in the prints and drawing area, mounted exhibitions, and taught. William Alfred Passavant (October 9, 1821 – June 3, 1894) was a Lutheran minister noted for bringing the Lutheran Deaconess movement to the United States. He is commemorated in the Calendar of Saints of the Lutheran Church on November 24 with Justus Falckner and Jehu Jones. Early life William Alfred Passavant was born in 1821 in Zelienople, Pennsylvania, the third and youngest son of Phillipe Louis Passavant and Fredericka Wilhelmina Basse (nicknamed "Zelie," hence the town's name).
