Passam National High School
Passam National High School is one of the six government-run national high schools in Papua New Guinea (PNG), which are also known as "schools of excellence". It is a coeducational school for Grades 11 and 12 and has a student population of around 600, consisting of both boarders and day-students. In 2020 and 2021 it was ranked as the top national high school in the country, based on exam results. History The school is situated about south of the town of Wewak in the East Sepik Province of PNG. It was converted to being a national high school in the late 1960s and its boarders come from all over the country. The aim of having such national schools was to develop a concept of national unity in a culturally diverse society. East Sepik Province
East Sepik is a province in Papua New Guinea. Its capital is Wewak. East Sepik has an estimated population of 433,481 people (2010 census) and is 43,426 km square in size. History Cherubim Dambui was appointed as East Sepik's first premier by Prime Minister Michael Somare upon the creation of the provincial government in 1976. Dambui remained interim premier until 1979, when he became East Sepik's permanent premier with a full term. He remained in office until 1983. Geography Wewak, the provincial capital, is located on the coast of East Sepik. There are a scattering of islands off shore, and coastal ranges dominate the landscape just inland of the coast. Wewak
Wewak is the capital of the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea. It is on the northern coast of the island of New Guinea. It is the largest town between Madang and Jayapura. It is the see city (seat) of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wewak. History Between 1943 and 1945, in World War II, Wewak was the site of the largest Japanese airbase in mainland New Guinea. The base was subjected to repeated bombing by Australian and American forces, most notably in one massive attack on 17 August 1943. Directly to the west of the town centre is a peninsula known as Cape Wom, which was the site of the surrender of Japanese forces in New Guinea on 13 September 1945. The site now houses a small memorial. The former Japanese airfield is still in use as the Wewak International Airport. The Papua New Guinea National Research Institute (PNG NRI) is a public policy and development research institute in Papua New Guinea. After independence it was established as an independent statutory authority by Act of Parliament. It absorbing other institutes in 1988, and took its current name in 1993. History In 1961 the New Guinea Research Unit (NGRU) was established in Port Moresby as part of the Australian National University. When PNG gained independence in 1975 , the NGRU became the Institute for Applied Social and Economic Research (IASER), established by legislative act. IASER began functioning formally on 1 January 1976, expanding its scope to publish monographs, discussion papers and bibliographies. In 1988 IASER absorbed both the Educational Research Unit (originally part of the University of Papua New Guinea) and the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies (IPNGS). Don Polye
Don Pomb Polye (born 1 February 1967) is a Papua New Guinean politician from Enga Province. He has been a Cabinet Minister under two Prime Ministers, and was briefly Deputy Prime Minister from July to December 2010. He has held Foreign Affairs, Immigration, Transport, Civil Aviation, Finance and Treasury portfolios. Polye was first elected in 2002 to the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea representing the Kandep Open electorate as a member of the National Alliance Party. He was the Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation from July 2006 to August 2009. Sir Michael Somare, the Prime Minister, appointed Polye to that position in July 2006 as part of a Cabinet reshuffle. He was also Deputy Prime Minister from July 2006 until August 2007.
