Pasig City MCW Sports is a Filipino professional basketball team representing Pasig. It was originally known as the Pasig Pirates, the Pasig Blue Pirates and the Pasig-Rizal Pirates from 1998 to 2000 in the now-defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association. Metropolitan Basketball Association
The Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), or Metroball, was a professional basketball league in the Philippines that ran from March 7, 1998, to July 26, 2002. History The MBA played its first game on March 7, 1998, at the Don Narciso Ramos Sports Complex in Lingayen, Pangasinan. Unlike the Philippine Basketball Association, in which teams represent companies, the MBA teams represented a particular city, province or island in the country. The league brought basketball closer to the people, and it raided the PBA for talent. The MBA was widely viewed as broadcast giant ABS-CBN's attempt to undermine the PBA after failing to snatch its broadcast rights in 1998. Metroball allowed foreigners to play for their teams, not requiring Philippine passports of them, nor requiring those foreigners to have Filipino blood. Nic Belasco
Nicholas M. Bayaca Belasco (born December 10, 1973) is a Filipino-American professional basketball player who last played for the Pasig Sta. Lucia Realtors of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). He was drafted 2nd overall by Sunkist in 1997. Born in Stockton, California, he was an import for the Westports Malaysia Dragons in the Asean Basketball League. He was an assistant coach for the Phoenix Pulse Fuel Masters of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He founded the Belasco Unlimited Skills Academy (BUSA). The Sta. Lucia Realtors were a basketball team owned by Sta. Lucia Realty and Development Corporation that played in the short-lived Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL). 2021 MPBL Invitational
The 2021 MPBL Invitational, officially known as the Chooks-to-Go MPBL Invitational powered by TM for sponsorship reasons, was an invitational tournament that serves as the prelude to the 2022–23 MPBL season. It commenced on December 11, 2021 and ended on December 23, 2021. The tournament was also the first for the MPBL since it was granted professional status by the Games and Amusements Board. The Invitational was also the first professional sports event in the Philippines to allow live audiences since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, with the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, the venue for the tournament, only allowed to be at 50 percent capacity. 2019–20 MPBL Season
The 2019–2020 MPBL season, known as the MPBL Lakan Season or Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Season for sponsorship reasons, was the third season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League and the second full season with a national scope. It was officially opened June 12, 2019 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay, which coincided with the Philippine Independence Day. From 26 teams in the last conference, the third season featured 31 team. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, the season was suspended on March 11, 2020, prior to the deciding games of the Division Finals. It resumed almost a year later, on March 10, 2021, in a bubble set-up in Subic, Zambales. It ended on March 21, 2021, with Davao Occidental Tigers winning the championship against the San Juan Knights after four games in a best-of-five championship series, three games to one. 2018-19 MPBL Season
The 2018 MPBL season is the inaugural season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. For the tournament for this season was named the Rajah Cup, also known as the Anta–Rajah Cup after sponsor Anta Sports. The tournament opened on January 25, 2018 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City. After the opening ceremonies, the game between Parañaque Patriots and Caloocan Supremos immediately followed. All games were aired on ABS-CBN Sports (ABS-CBN Sports and Action Channel 23 & HD Channel 166).
