Benj Pasek (born June 6, 1985) is an American theater and television composer and lyricist best known for his works ''The Greatest Showman'', ''La La Land'' and ''Dear Evan Hansen'', all of which he co-wrote with his songwriting partner, Justin Paul. Early life and education Pasek was born into a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother was a teacher who wrote children's songs, which got him interested in music. As a child, he sang with the Philadelphia Boys Choir & Chorale. He went on to earn a B.F.A. in musical theater from the University of Michigan. It was there that he met Justin Paul. When Pasek and Paul were unsatisfied with the roles they were getting in the shows at the university, the two decided to begin writing their own shows. Their works include ''A Christmas Story'', ''Dogfight'', '' Edges'', ''Dear Evan Hansen'', and ''James and the Giant Peach''. Dušan Pašek (18 January 1985 – 5 November 2021) was a Slovak professional ice hockey player who played HC Slovan Bratislava in the Slovak Extraliga. On the morning of 5 November 2021, Pašek was discovered hanged in Koliba, Bratislava, during his time as a club official for Bratislava Capitals. His suicide at age 36 came only two days after the death of fellow club player Boris Sádecký.
