Parry Shire
Parry Shire is a former local government area in New South Wales, Australia. The former Parry Shire was located in the Liverpool Plains region and covered a broad area of countryside, south and east of the city of Tamworth. It did not include any major town, but had several villages. Parry Shire was formed in 1980 by the amalgamation of the former Peel Shire and Cockburn Shire. Part of the Peel Shire area was re-allocated to the growing City of Tamworth area at that time. Parry Shire was named because it occupied most of the land of Parry County, one of the cadastral ( survey and land registration ) divisions of New South Wales. Parry County was named after Sir William Edward Parry, a director of the Australian Agricultural Company, an early major landholder in the area. Parry Shire was abolished in a local government restructuring in 2004. Liverpool Plains
The Liverpool Plains are an extensive agricultural area covering about of the north-western slopes of New South Wales in Australia. These plains are a region of prime agricultural land bounded to the east by the Great Dividing Range, to the south by the Liverpool Range and on the west by the Warrumbungle Range. The area is drained by the Namoi River and its tributaries, the Mooki River and the Peel River. There are many depressions, across the plains, which remain as lakes for long periods after heavy rain. These plains are unusual in that many steep hills arise suddenly from the plains. Towns in the Liverpool Plains include Gunnedah, Narrabri, Quirindi, Werris Creek and Tamworth. Smaller villages include Breeza, Carroll, Mullaley and Willow Tree. Most of the region nowadays comes under the jurisdiction of Liverpool Plains Shire Council. Tamworth, New South Wales
Tamworth is a city and administrative centre of the north-western region of New South Wales, Australia. Situated on the Peel River (New South Wales), Peel River within the local government area of the Tamworth Regional Council, it is the largest and most populated city in the region, with a population of 63,920 in 2021, making it the second largest inland city in New South Wales. Peel Shire
Peel Shire was a local government area, in New South Wales, Australia. Peel Shire was proclaimed in 1907 and covered a rural area surrounding the town ( and later, city ) of Tamworth. It was named after the Peel River which runs through the area. Peel Shire was amalgamated with Cockburn Shire to form Parry Shire. Cockburn Shire
Cockburn Shire was a local government area in the Australia state of New South Wales. Cockburn Shire was established in 1907, and covered a sparsely populated area east of the town of Tamworth, in the area of the Cockburn River, after which the shire was named. Cockburn Shire was amalgamated with Peel Shire in 1980, to create Parry Shire. Parry County
Parry County is one of the 141 Cadastral divisions of New South Wales. It is bounded by the Peel River and Cockburn River on the north, near Tamworth. The Moonbi Range is on the eastern boundary, and the Peel Range on the western boundary. The Great Dividing Range is the boundary to the south-east. It includes the towns of Dungowan, Ogunbil, Woolomin, Loomberah, Piallamore and Nundle. Parry County was named in honour of Sir William Edward Parry, Commissioner for the Australian Agricultural Company, who selected the area within the county which was granted to what was then called the Peel River Company. The Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) () is a public-listed Australian company that, as at 2018, owned and operated feedlots and farms covering around of land in Queensland and the Northern Territory, roughly one percent of Australia's land mass. As of July 2008 AACo had a staff of 500 and operated 24 cattle stations and two feedlots, consisting of over 565,000 beef cattle. Founding of the company The inquiry into the colony of New South Wales conducted by John Bigge from 1819 to 1823 recommended that large grants of land be given to "men of real capital" who would utilise significant levels of convict labour to maintain these estates. Liverpool Plains Shire is a local government area located in the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia.
