The Shire of Paroo is a local government area in South West Queensland, Australia. The administrative centre is the town of Cunnamulla. The Paroo Shire covers an area of . In the , the Shire had a population of 1,679. The region incorporates the towns of Cunnamulla, Yowah, Eulo and Wyandra, with Cunnamulla being the hub of the Shire and is centrally situated on the crossroads of the Balonne and Mitchell Highways. Cunnamulla, meaning “long stretch of water”, gets its name from the picturesque Warrego River which meanders past the town and is a popular spot for fishing and water sports. The Paroo Shire has an ever changing landscape, from the Open Mitchell Grass Flood Plains in the East to the Yowah opal fields where the Yowah Nut is found and the Mulga lands to the West. Paroo River
The Paroo River, a series of waterholes, connected in wet weather as a running stream of the Darling catchment within the Murray–Darling basin, is located in the South West region of Queensland and Far West region of New South Wales, Australia. It is the home of the Paarkantji people. Course and features The river rises in the gorge country of western Queensland south of the Mariala National Park, and flows generally south and spreads into the vast floodplains of New South Wales, eventually reaching the Paroo overflow lakes. Most commonly, the Paroo River terminates on the floodplain south of Wanaaring; and only reaches the Darling River in the wettest of years, otherwise spilling into the Paroo River Wetlands. The river is joined by forty-three minor tributaries; as it descends over its course. Paroo Station
Paroo Station, often referred to as Paroo, is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station. It is located about north west of Wiluna and east of Meekatharra in the Mid West region of Western Australia. The Meekatharra–Wiluna railway used to traverse the property. Frederick Albert Crews along with his son C. V. Crews and Reginald Grant acquired Paroo in 1923 and set about stocking the property with sheep. Crews and Grant put Paroo up for auction in 1927 after they dissolved their partnership. At this time Paroo occupied an area of and was stocked with 5,500 sheep. Approximately had been enclosed by of fencing dividing it into 10 paddocks. Stock were watered by 14 wells, most which were equipped with mills and troughs. The Crews family retained Paroo and appointed J. C. Baker as station manager. In 1934 the property was put back on the market after Clarrie Crews fell to ill health.
