Chief Whip
The Chief Whip is a political leader whose task is to enforce the whipping system, which aims to ensure that legislators who are members of a political party attend and vote on legislation as the party leadership prescribes. United Kingdom In British politics, the Chief Whip of the governing party in the House of Commons is usually also appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury, a Cabinet position. The Government Chief Whip has an official residence at 12 Downing Street. However, the Chief Whip's office is currently located at 9 Downing Street. Walter Topping
Walter William Buchanan Topping (1908–26 July 1978) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Topping studied at the Rossall School and Queen's University Belfast, before becoming a barrister in 1930. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Artillery. He was elected to the Parliament of Northern Ireland in 1945 as the Ulster Unionist Party member for Larne, serving as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Finance - effectively the Chief Whip - from 1947 until 1956, then as the Minister of Home Affairs. He resigned in 1959 to become the Recorder of Belfast, serving until 1978. Harry West
Henry William West (27 March 1917 – 5 February 2004) was a politician in Northern Ireland who served as leader of the Ulster Unionist Party from 1974 until 1979. Career to Stormont West was born in County Fermanagh and educated at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen. He worked as a farmer, taking an interest in local government, but it was not until 1954 that he entered Stormont as member for the Enniskillen seat, succeeding Thomas Nelson. In 1960 he was appointed Minister of Agriculture in the government of Lord Brookeborough, which he was to retain under the leadership of Terence O'Neill. He became one of a number of Stormont MPs critical of O'Neill's conciliatory approach towards Nationalists and in 1969 he had the whip withdrawn, along with William Craig. Robert Corkey
Robert Corkey (1881 – 26 January 1966) was a Presbyterian minister, a professor of theology and a Unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Biography He was born at Glendermott Parish, Waterside, Derry, the son of Rev. Dr Joseph Corkey. He was educated at Foyle College, Magee College, Queen’s College, Belfast, the University of Edinburgh and Trinity College, Dublin. He was a Minister of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland at Ballygawley from 1906 to 1910 and Monaghan from 1910 to 1917; and then Professor of Ethics and Practical Theology at Assembly's College, Belfast from 1917 to 1951. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ireland from 1945 to 1946. Basil Brooke, 1st Viscount Brookeborough
Basil Stanlake Brooke, 1st Viscount Brookeborough, (9 June 1888 – 18 August 1973), styled Sir Basil Brooke, 5th Baronet between 1907 and 1952, was an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician and paramilitary leader who became the third Prime Minister of Northern Ireland in May 1943, holding office until March 1963. Lord Brookeborough had previously held several ministerial positions in the Government of Northern Ireland, and has been described as "perhaps the last Unionist leader to command respect, loyalty and affection across the social and political spectrum". Henry Lyle Mulholland, 2nd Baron Dunleath (30 January 1854 – 22 March 1931), was an Irish Conservative Member of Parliament. John Warden Brooke, 2nd Viscount Brookeborough, PC (NI) (9 November 1922 – 5 March 1987) was a Northern Irish politician. He was the son of Basil Brooke, 1st Viscount Brookeborough, third Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. Early life He was educated at Eton College. During the Second World War he served in the British Army in North Africa, Italy and Germany. He was on the personal staff of Field Marshal Sir Harold Alexander (later created Lord Alexander). He was an Aide-de-Camp to Field Marshal Lord Wavell, the Viceroy of India, early in 1947. In 1934, his father claimed in the House of Commons of Northern Ireland at Stormont that there had been a plot to kidnap the young John Brooke by Irish Republicans during Sir Basil Brooke's time as Commandant of the Ulster Special Constabulary. John Dobson (7 May 1929 - 12 September 2009) was a former solicitor and unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Born in Lurgan, Dobson studied at Lurgan College and Trinity College Dublin. Roy Hamilton Bradford (7 July 1921 – 2 September 1998) was a Unionist politician in Northern Ireland and a government minister in both the Parliament of Northern Ireland and the 1973 Northern Ireland Assembly. Born in Ligoniel in Belfast, Bradford studied at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Trinity College Dublin, where he was elected a Scholar. James Chichester-Clark
James Dawson Chichester-Clark, Baron Moyola, PC, DL (12 February 1923 – 17 May 2002) was the penultimate Prime Minister of Northern Ireland and eighth leader of the Ulster Unionist Party between 1969 and March 1971. He was Member of the Northern Ireland Parliament for South Londonderry for 12 years, beginning at the by-election to replace his grandmother, Dame Dehra Parker in 1960. He stopped being an MP when the Stormont Parliament was suspended and subsequently abolished with the introduction of Direct Rule by the British Government.
