Parkville Railway Station
Parkville railway station is a railway station currently under construction as part of the Metro Tunnel project in Melbourne, Victoria. It will be built below Grattan Street between Leicester and Elizabeth Streets. The station has been built using the cut-and-cover method. Construction commenced in 2018 with the station due to open in 2025. It will serve the large health and education precinct in the Melbourne suburb of Parkville, including the University of Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Women's Hospital. It is set to be an interchange between the Metro Tunnel and the proposed Metro Tunnel 2, and provisions have been left in the design of the station to allow for this. This new station will provide a direct connection to the metropolitan train network for Parkville for the first time. An island platform (also center platform, centre platform) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to pragmatic and cost reasons. They are also useful within larger stations where local and express services for the same direction of travel can be provided from opposite sides of the same platform thereby simplifying transfers between the two tracks.
