Parkes Ministry (1872–1875)
The first Parkes ministry was the fourteenth ministry of the Colony of New South Wales, and the first of five occasions of being led by Henry Parkes. Having served in the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1854 and 1856, Parkes was elected in the first free elections for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly held in 1856, however resigned from Parliament later that year. He served in the Assembly on several occasions, between 1858 and 1870, being forced to resign on 4 occasions due to his personal insolvency. He came to power as Premier on the first occasion after the Sir James Martin ministry had involved itself in a petty squabble with the colony of Victoria over a question of border duties. The acting-governor had sent for William Forster before parliament met, but he was unable to form a ministry, and in May 1872 Parkes formed his first ministry. John Sutherland (New South Wales Politician)
John Sutherland (16 February 1816 – 23 June 1889) was a builder and politician in colonial New South Wales. Early life Sutherland was born near Wick, Caithness in Scotland, the son of a crofter, John Sutherland, and his wife Louisa. Sutherland had little formal education and trained as carpenter. He emigrated to New South Wales as an unassisted migrant, arriving in 1838 and set himself up as a successful builder. Sutherland married Mary Ogilvie, daughter of Captain Ogilvie of Campbelltown, on 2 May 1839. They had two sons, who died young, and a daughter. In 1863 with John Frazer and William Manson he took up 287 square miles near Port Denison, Queensland. He later held another 250 square miles in the South Kennedy district as well as Lindisfarne in the North Gregory district. William Piddington
William Richman Piddington (1815 – 25 November 1887) was an Australian bookseller and politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1856 and 1877 and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1879 until his death. He served two brief terms as the Colonial Treasurer of New South Wales in 1872 and 1877. Early life Piddington was born in the parish of Newington St Mary, Surrey, England on 8 March 1813, to parents Bythima (née Richman) and William Weston Piddington. Being from a family of booksellers, William Richman Piddington was initially apprenticed to a bookshop in Bond Street, London. Mudgee was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales first created in 1859, partly replacing Wellington and Bligh and named after and including Mudgee. Joseph Innes
Sir Joseph George Long Innes (16 October 1834 – 28 October 1896), was a judge and politician in colonial Australia, and Attorney General of New South Wales from 1873 to 1875. Innes was born in Sydney, New South Wales the eldest son of Major Joseph Long Innes (superintendent of police) and his wife Elizabeth Anne, the daughter of Thomas Reibey and Mary Reibey. Innes was educated at William Timothy Cape's school and at the King's School, Parramatta. He then went to England, and entered as a student at Lincoln's Inn in November 1856; and, after winning a certificate of honour in May 1859, he was called to the bar in November of the same year. Having returned to Australia, Innes was admitted to the New South Wales bar in 1862, and practised till 1865, when he was appointed a district judge in Queensland. James Squire Farnell
James Squire Farnell (25 June 1825 – 21 August 1888) was an Australian politician and Premier of New South Wales. Farnell was a hard-working legislator who gave much study to the land question and also tried hard for some years to pass a bill for the regulation of contagious diseases. Early years Farnell was born in St Leonards, New South Wales, son of Thomas Charles Farnell, a brewer, and Mary Ann Farnell, daughter of James Squire, an English Romanichal, who arrived on the First Fleet and may have been Australia's first brewer. Edward Butler (Australian Politician)
Edward Butler, QC (1823 – 9 June 1879), was a barrister and politician in colonial New South Wales, 13th Attorney General of New South Wales. Butler was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, son of Michael Butler, farmer, and his wife Mary, née Joyce. He was educated at St Kieran's College intending to become a priest, according to Thomas Carlyle. During the Great Famine he became a journalist and supported Young Ireland as the editor of the '' Galway Vindicator''. Young Ireland attempted to build an Irish national movement that included Catholics and Protestants and campaigned for a common educational system for all denominations. Butler found that his ambitions to be trained as a lawyer were blocked in Ireland because of his Catholicism and he migrated to Sydney, arriving in May 1853, where he found work writing for Henry Parkes' ''Empire''. George Lloyd (politician)
George Alfred Lloyd (14 November 1815 – 25 December 1897) was an Australian politician, elected as a member for Newcastle from 1869 to 1877, 1880 to 1882 and 1885 to 1887. Early life Lloyd was born in Norwood, Surrey, England and educated at Aske's Hospital School, London. His father's business failed in and he was sent to work for a family friend in Sydney in 1833. He opened a store and was postmaster at Hinton, near Raymond Terrace on the Hunter River. After his employer's bankruptcy, he became a farmer on the Williams River and then an auctioneer in Sydney. He married Mary Threlkeld in July 1841 and they had eleven children. With the discovery of gold, he moved into the gold related businesses of quartz crushing and gold escorting and then invested in shipping. He returned to London in 1855 and his company, ''Lloyd, Beilby & Co.'', acted as commercial agents to the Government of New South Wales until 1859, when he went bankrupt due to losses on his shipping business.
