Parish Walk
The Parish Walk (sponsored by Manx Telecom since 2012, previously known as the Clerical Medical Parish Walk until 2009, then Scottish Widows Parish walk up to 2011) is a racewalking, walking race that takes place on the Isle of Man each year usually on the weekend nearest to the Northern Summer solstice. It is the biggest walking event on the island. The Parish Walk is so called because the route passes through all of the island's seventeen parishes, covering a total distance of . Originally, walkers had to touch the door of each of the seventeen parish churches, which are all still visited but nowadays electronic timing chips are worn. A time limit of 24 hours is given, and there are cut-off times for reaching each stage. Only a small proportion of walkers are expected to complete the full distance each year. A parish is a territorial entity in many Christian denominations, constituting a division within a diocese. A parish is under the pastoral care and clerical jurisdiction of a priest, often termed a parish priest, who might be assisted by one or more curates, and who operates from a parish church. Historically, a parish often covered the same geographical area as a manor. Its association with the parish church remains paramount. By extension the term ''parish'' refers not only to the territorial entity but to the people of its community or congregation as well as to church property within it. Rushen
Rushen ( ; gv, Rosien), formally Kirk Christ Rushen, is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located in the south of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of the same name. Administratively, part of the historic parish of Rushen, and the majority of the population, is now covered by the village districts of Port Erin and Port St Mary. As a result, there is an exclave of the parish district which includes the Calf of Man. Other settlements in the parish include Cregneash. Local government For the purposes of local government, the majority of the area of the historic parish formed a single parish district, with Commissioners, but this has now been amalgamated with Arbory. Sandra Brown (ultradistance Athlete)
Sandra Brown (born 1 April 1949) is a British ultra distance walker / runner who holds a number of world records in the field of long-distance walking. Career After a childhood which included many, duly completed her first formal marathon in 1982 in Winchester, at age 33 years. That same year saw her enter her first 'ultra' (a race of a distance beyond the marathon's 26 miles 385 yards) with the 100 km Surrey Summits in April and a Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) crosscountry 100 mile event alongs than 24 hours) in the annual English Centurions 24 Hour race - 32 "hundreds" walked between 1982 and 2018. Brown has excelled in both ultradistance running and walking modes and has shown a great interest in the extremely long ultra distance events. Onchan
Onchan (; glv, Kione Droghad) is a village in the parish of Onchan on the Isle of Man. It is at the north end of Douglas Bay. Administratively a district, it has the second largest population of settlements on the island, after Douglas, with which it forms a conurbation. In Manx the name for the village is ''Kione Droghad'' meaning "bridge end". Early history In the 1890s a 5,000-year-old stone age axe was found in the Cassa Field by Onchan wetlands. In the Viking reign Onchan became part of Middle sheading. The name of the village is identified with St Connachan who was Bishop of Sodor and Man in 540 and the church named after him, Kirk Coonachan. An early name for the village is gv, Kiondroghad which literally translated means "bridgehead". The earliest written record of Kiondroghad was in the 1643 Manorial Roll, when it was very small. Lonan (parish)
Lonan ( ; gv, Lonan) is one of the 17 parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Garff. Other settlements in the parish include Baldrine and Ballabeg. Local government For the purposes of local government, since May 2016 the historic parish of Lonan has been part of a single Garff local authority, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold. Until this amalgamation, the village district of Laxey had been separated from its surrounding parish of Lonan since 1895. Maughold ( ; gv, Maghal) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is named for St Maughold, the island's patron saint. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Garff. Lezayre ( ; gv, Creest ny h-Ayrey), formally Kirk Christ Lezayre, is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. Andreas (parish)
Andreas ( or ; gv, Skeerey Andreas) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located in the north of the island (part of the traditional ''North Side'' division) in the sheading of Ayre. The main settlement in the parish in the village of Andreas, which is also known as Kirk Andreas. History There are several ancient monuments and sites located in the parish of Andreas. Ballavarry Burial Mound is a Bronze Age burial mound found a short distance outside of the village of Andreas. Knock y Doonee is a significant historical and archaeological site in Andreas. Ballaugh
Ballaugh ( ; , ) is a small village on the Isle of Man in the parish of Ballaugh (parish), the same name, in the sheading of Michael (parish), Michael. It is the only village in the parish. The parish adjoins Jurby to the north, Lezayre to the east, Michael to the south and south-west, and the Irish Sea to the west. It stretches about 5 miles or 8 km from north to south: at the extreme southern end it includes part of Sulby Reservoir, and to the west, it includes part of Bishopscourt, Isle of Man, Bishopscourt, the former house of the island's Bishop of Sodor and Man, Bishop.
