Parish
A parish is a territorial entity in many Christian denominations, constituting a division within a diocese. A parish is under the pastoral care and clerical jurisdiction of a priest, often termed a parish priest, who might be assisted by one or more curates, and who operates from a parish church. Historically, a parish often covered the same geographical area as a manor. Its association with the parish church remains paramount. By extension the term ''parish'' refers not only to the territorial entity but to the people of its community or congregation as well as to church property within it. In England this church property was technically in ownership of the parish priest ''ex-officio'', vested in him on his institution to that parish. Etymology and use First attested in English in the late, 13th century, the word ''parish'' comes from the Old French ''paroisse'', in turn from la, paroecia, the latinisation of the grc, παροικία, paroikia, "sojourning in a foreign ...

Parish (Catholic Church)
In the Catholic Church, a parish ( la, parochia) is a stable community of the faithful within a particular church, whose pastoral care has been entrusted to a parish priest (Latin: ''parochus''), under the authority of the diocesan bishop. It is the lowest ecclesiastical subdivision in the Catholic episcopal polity, and the primary constituent unit of a diocese or eparchy. Parishes are extant in both the Latin and Eastern Catholic Churches. In the 1983 Code of Canon Law, parishes are constituted under cc. 515–552, entitled "Parishes, Pastors, and Parochial Vicars." Types Most parishes are ''territorial parishes'', which comprise all the Christian faithful living within a defined geographic area. Some parishes may be joined with others in a deanery or ''vicariate forane'' and overseen by a ''vicar forane'', also known as a ''dean'' or '' archpriest''. Per canon 518, a bishop may also erect non-territorial parishes, or ''personal parishes'', within his see. Personal parishes ar ...

Parish (Church Of England)
The parish with its parish church(es) is the basic territorial unit of the Church of England. The parish has its roots in the Roman Catholic Church and survived the English Reformation largely untouched. Each is within one of 42 dioceses: divided between the thirty of the Canterbury and the twelve of that of York. There are around 12,500 Church of England parishes. Historically, in England and Wales, the parish was the principal unit of local administration for both church and civil purposes; that changed in the 19th century when separate civil parishes were established. Many Church of England parishes still align, fully or in part, with civil parishes boundaries. Each such ecclesiastical parish is administered by a parish priest, specifically Rector, Vicar or Perpetual Curate depending on if the original set up of the rectory had become ''lay'' or ''disappropriated'' meaning its medieval rectorial property rights sold or bestowed on another body such as an abbey. This person may ...

Parish (Denmark)
In Denmark, a parish ( Danish: ''sogn'', plural ''sogne'') is a local ecclesiastical unit in the Church of Denmark. Each parish is assigned to a physical church, and the church's administration (''sognekontor'') handles the area's civic registration of births, marriages and deaths. Each Danish municipality is composed of one or more parishes. From the middle of the 19th century until the 1970 administrative reform, parishes not located in a Danish market town ('' købstad'') also operated as the lowest level of civil administration, either individually or in groups of two or three parishes known as parish municipalities (''sognekommuner''). In the civil context, the parish was headed by a parish council (''sogneråd''), the chairman of which was called a parish chairman (''sognerådsformand'', literally meaning a parish council chairman). History Danish parishes originated in the Middle Ages. Beginning in 1645, Danish pastors have been required to maintain a parish register (''k ...

Cape Henry Parish
Cape Henry Parish ( da, Kap Henry Parish) is a broad headland in the Wandel Sea, Arctic Ocean, northernmost Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. History In 1900 Peary explored the north coast of Greenland from Cape Washington in the west to a place he named Wyckoff Island in the east, on the way reaching Cape Morris Jesup, the northernmost point of mainland Greenland. Cape Henry Parish was visible in the distance and was named by Robert Peary after banker Henry Parish (1829-1917), President of the New York Life Insurance & Trust Co., and one of the founding members of the Peary Arctic Club in New York. This headland was marked on Robert Peary's map of the eastern coast of North Greenland as guesswork, based on sighting of two headlands from Wyckoff Land, for the visibility was marred by fog.Spencer Apollonio, ''Lands That Hold One Spellbound: A Story of East Greenland,'' 2008 p. 101 Cape Henry Parish was finally charted with accuracy ...
