French Go Federation
The French Federation of Go, or Fédération Française de Go (FFG), is a French association (as per the 1901 law about association) that governs the game of Go in France. Founded in 1978, it obtained the "popular education and youth agreement" from the "Ministry of Health, Youth, Sport and Associative Life" in February 1991. The FFG has been a member of the "Mind Games and Leisure Activities Confederation" (CLE) (a French confederation) since 1983, and is also affiliated to the European Go Federation. Organisation In October 2008, the FFG was composed of 110 clubs, with more than 1,650 licensed players. European Go Federation
The European Go Federation (EGF) is a non-profit organization with the purpose of encouraging, regulating, co-ordinating, and disseminating the playing of the board game Go in Europe. The EGF was founded in 1957, the same year that the inaugural European Go Congress (EGC) took place in Cuxhaven, Germany. The Congress has been an annual event every year since then, held each time in a different European city. The European Go Championship takes place during the EGC, as well as the Annual General Meeting (AGM). In 2014, the European Professional System was established by the European Go Federation. Membership is open to any Go-organising association in a country in or near Europe. There are currently 35 full members, and two suspended members. Go (game)
Go is an abstract strategy board game for two players in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. The game was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago and is believed to be the oldest board game continuously played to the present day. A 2016 survey by the International Go Federation's 75 member nations found that there are over 46 million people worldwide who know how to play Go and over 20 million current players, the majority of whom live in East Asia. The playing pieces are called stones. One player uses the white stones and the other, black. The players take turns placing the stones on the vacant intersections (''points'') of a board. Once placed on the board, stones may not be moved, but stones are removed from the board if the stone (or group of stones) is surrounded by opposing stones on all orthogonally adjacent points, in which case the stone or group is ''captured''. Pandanet Go European Cup
The Pandanet Go European Cup was a Go competition played across Europe. The now defunct European Cup and European Go Tour (which both ended in April 2007) merged to form this cup after Toyota's support of the Tour ended. Many of the games played during the Cup are broadcast on Pandanet's Internet Go Server (IGS) and the KGS Go Server. Since 2011, Pandanet decided to end the support of this competition and wanted to take care of the European Go Teams Championship. This competition is called now European Go Cup as previously. Format The Pandanet Go European Cup consists of a series of events spread out across Europe. These events fall into one of five levels (two carried over from the European Cup and three from the Tour). Fan Hui
Fan Hui (; born 27 December 1981) is a Chinese-born French Go player. Becoming a professional Go player in 1996, Fan moved to France in 2000 and became the coach of the French national Go team in 2005. He was the winner of the European Go Championship in 2013, 2014 and 2015. As of 2015, he is ranked as a 2 dan professional. He additionally won the 2016 European Professional Go Championship. AlphaGo vs Fan Hui In October 2015, Fan was defeated by the Google DeepMind AI program AlphaGo 5–0, the first time an AI has beaten a human professional player at the game without a handicap. Fan described the program as "very strong and stable, it seems like a wall. ... Csaba Mérő
Csaba Mérő (born July 7, 1979 in Budapest, Hungary) is an amateur Go player. Biography Mérő began playing Go when he was 14. He is the son of Hungarian mathematician László Mérő. By 1996 he had already won the European Youth Go Championship and Hungarian Championship. After he finished secondary school he moved to Japan in 1999. He was an insei there for two and a half years. His teacher was Chizu Kobayashi. He was given the chance to study with some of Japan's top players including Satoru Kobayashi and Cho U. After he failed the professional test, he moved back to Europe in 2001. After returning to Europe, a French summer Go camp invited Csaba to become an instructor for the summer. With his experience in Japan as an insei, Csaba came back much stronger and quickly rose to the top of the European standings. The International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) is an association of the world governing bodies for contract bridge, chess, draughts (checkers), go, xiangqi (Chinese chess), and mahjong. Antony () is a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, France, from the centre of Paris. Antony is a subprefecture of the Hauts-de-Seine department and the seat of the arrondissement of Antony.
