Pareas Carinatus
The keeled slug-eating snake (''Pareas carinatus'') is a species of snake in the family Pareidae . It is relatively widespread in Southeast Asia, from southern China (Yunnan) to Burma and Indochina to the Malay Archipelago (Borneo, Java, Lombok, Sumatra, Bali). Two subspecies are recognized: ''P. c. carinatus'' and ''P. c. unicolor'', the latter being confined to Cambodia. Keeled slug-eating snakes live in or near forests. Iwasaki's snail-eater (''Pareas iwasakii'') is a species of snake in the family Pareidae. The species is endemic to the Yaeyama Islands in the southern Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Etymology The specific name, ''iwasakii'', is in honor of Japanese meteorologist Takuji Iwasaki. Ecology ''Pareas iwasakii'' is a snail-eating specialist; even newly hatched individuals feed on snails. It has asymmetric jaws, with more teeth on the right (about 25 teeth compared to 15 teeth on the left) which facilitates feeding on snails with dextral (clockwise coiled) shells. A consequence of this asymmetry is that ''Pareas iwasakii'' is much less adept at preying on sinistral (counterclockwise coiled) snails. It systematically directs its attack on snails from the right in order to insert its lower jaw into the shell opening. John Van Denburgh
John Van Denburgh (August 23, 1872 – October 24, 1924) was an American herpetologist from California (who also used the name Van Denburgh in publications, hence this name is used below). Biography Van Denburgh was born in San Francisco and enrolled at Stanford University in 1891. As of 1895, he organized the herpetology department of the California Academy of Sciences. In 1897, he received a Ph.D. from Stanford University and earned a M.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1902. Subsequently, he practiced medicine in San Francisco, while again serving as curator of the herpetological collections of the California Academy of Sciences. After the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 he was instrumental in rebuilding the lost herpetology collections through new expeditions and also acquisitions of other collections. Formosa slug snake or Taiwan slug snake (''Pareas formosensis'') is a species of non-venomous snake in the family Pareatidae. It is endemic to Taiwan. Taxonomy It has been suggested that ''Pareas chinensis'' should be treated as a synonym of ''P. formosensis'', but recent genetic research does not support this: ''P. formosensis'' does not appear closely related to ''P. chinensis'' but is instead a sister species to '' P. hamptoni''. The delineation of these species is not clear. In future, ''P. formosensis'' might become a subspecies of ''P. hamptoni'', or some snakes from the mainland might be classified as ''P. formosensis''.
