Pardo (surname)
Pardo (Hebrew language, Hebrew: פרדו) is a very old surname of Sephardi Jews, Sephardic Jewish origin and that derives from the Greek and Latin name Pardus which means leopard, to later change to Spanish Pardo meaning brown and referring to the color of the feline, in Latin "Panthera Pardus, Panthera pardus" (leopard); nicknamed of this way because of those Jews who had the characteristic tan skin color. Israel was conquered by the Greeks and Ancient Rome, Romans, and many Jews began to adopt Greeks and Latin names. This surname belongs to the Jewish people who settled in the Iberian Peninsula, being at that time the ancient Roman province of Hispania, which later with the arrival of Christianity, some Jews would convert to have a better social status, this being long before being forced to convert to Christianity by the Catholic Monarchs or their subsequent expulsion. Hebrew Language
Hebrew (; ; ) is a Northwest Semitic language of the Afroasiatic language family. Historically, it is one of the spoken languages of the Israelites and their longest-surviving descendants, the Jews and Samaritans. It was largely preserved throughout history as the main liturgical language of Judaism (since the Second Temple period) and Samaritanism. Hebrew is the only Canaanite language still spoken today, and serves as the only truly successful example of a dead language that has been revived. Joseph Pardo (hazzan)
Joseph Pardo (c. 1624 – 1677) was an English hazzan. He appears to have gone to London from Amsterdam, where his father, David, was a rabbi. He wrote "''Shulhan Tahor''," a compendium of the first two parts of Joseph Caro's '' Shulhan 'Aruk'', which was edited by his son, David, and printed at Amsterdam in 1686, dedicated to the "Kaal Kados De Londres" (Holy Community of London), but with an approbation from the bet din of Amsterdam. Juan Pardo (explorer)
Juan Pardo was a Spanish explorer who was active in the later half of the sixteenth century. He led a Spanish expedition from the Atlantic coast through what is now North and South Carolina and into eastern Tennessee on the orders of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, in an attempt to find an inland route to a silver-producing town in Mexico. Menéndez had built Fort San Felipe (1566), and established Santa Elena, on present-day Parris Island; these were the first Spanish settlements in what is now South Carolina. While leading his expedition deeper into the interior, Pardo founded Fort San Juan at Joara, the first European settlement (1567–1568) in the interior of North Carolina, and five additional forts in what are the modern US states of North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Moses ben Raphael Pardo (died 1888) was a rabbi and rabbinical emissary. He was born in Jerusalem. After serving as rabbi in Jerusalem for many years, he left the city in 1870 and traveled to North Africa on a mission on behalf of Jerusalem. On his return trip in 1871 he stopped in Alexandria and accepted an offer to serve as the rabbi of the Jewish community there, a position he held until his death. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo (born 24 June 1962) is a Mexican scientist, politician, and head of government of Mexico City, a position equivalent to a state governor.
