Paratriathlon At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
The paratriathlon competitions at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 10–12 September 2016 at Fort Copacabana. Sixty athletes competed across two genders, and six events. This was the first Paralympic Games to feature paratriathlon, one of two new sports (along with paracanoe) added to the schedule for 2016. Format The Paralympic triathlon contained three components; a swim, cycle, and a run. The competition took the form of a single event between all competitors with no heats. The competition took place across four of the five recognised paratriathlon classifications; both genders competed in the PT2 and PT4 classifications, the PT1 category for men only, where wheelchair athletes used handcycles on the cycling leg, and racing wheelchairs on the run leg, and the PT5 category for women only, where women with visual impairments were assisted by a sighted guide, using a tandem bicycle on the cycling leg; as with other events for blind and visuall ... Fort Copacabana
Fort Copacabana ( pt, Forte de Copacabana, ) is a military base at the south end of the beach that defines the district of Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The base is open to the public and contains the ''Museu Histórico do Exército'' (Army Historical Museum) and a coastal defense fort that is the actual Fort Copacabana. History The fort is built on a headland that originally contained a small chapel holding a replica of the Virgen de Copacabana, the patron saint of Bolivia. In 1908 the Brazilian army started to build a modern coastal defense fort on the headland to protect both the beach of Copacabana and the entrance to the harbour of Rio de Janeiro. The fort, completed in 1914, consists of two armoured cupolas, one holding a pair of Krupp cannons, and the other a pair of Krupp cannons. Allysa Seely
Allysa Seely (born January 4, 1989) is an American paratriathlete and gold medalist at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Paralympics. Background Seely was born on January 4, 1989. She grew up in Glendale, Arizona and graduated from Mountain Ridge High School in 2007. She attended Arizona State University afterwards. In September 2008 Seely raced her first triathlon as part of a group that raises money for cancer research and then joined the Arizona State University triathlon team. In 2010 Seely was diagnosed with Chiari II malformation, basilar invagination, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. In August, 2013, her left leg was amputated below the knee. In 2020 Seely was diagnosed with endocarditis as well as a blood clot in her heart. Sports career Seely was nationally ranked in the triathlon prior to her diagnoses and amputation. Mohamed Lahna (born 11 March 1982) is a Moroccan paratriathlete. Lahna won bronze in the men's PT2 paratriathlon at the 2016 Paralympics. Background Mohamed Lahna was born without a right femur; due to this, he was not able to compete in his first triathlon until 2008. He started as a strong swimmer and was able to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar. He went on to represent Morocco until 2016. Andrew James Lewis (born 24 January 1983) is a retired British paratriathlete. Lewis is one of Britain's most successful PT2 paratriathletes, winning gold medals at European, world and Paralympic levels. Background As a youngster, Lewis competed for Gloucestershire as a cross-country runner. At the age of 16 he was involved in a motorcycle accident, which eventually resulted in a through the knee amputation in his right leg when he was 22. Career Lewis took up paratriathlon in 2013, competing in the men's PT2 category from 2014. In August 2014 he won the British Paratriathlon National Championships.
