Parallel (video)
''Parallel'' is a video feature compiling all of R.E.M.'s ''Automatic for the People'' and '' Monster''-era promotional videos, as well as several recorded for this release alone. It was released on video on May 30, 1995, and on DVD format on August 22, 2000, both on the Warner Brothers label. The release, which runs at 70 minutes, features promotional videos to all of the band's singles from ''Automatic for the People'' and all but one from '' Monster'' ("Tongue" had not been released as a single until after this compilation). Also included are several avant-garde clips excerpted from 1995 tour films, ranging from ten seconds to two minutes, playing in between each song, as well as an A–Z of R.E.M. at the end of the feature. There are no bonus features on the DVD; however, there is an optional lyrics subtitle track. Audio on the DVD-5 is PCM Stereo. The DVD was certified "15" in the UK due to nudity in 'Nightswimming'. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock, or alt-rock, is a category of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1970s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Mike Mills
Michael Edward Mills (born December 17, 1958) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer who was a founding member of the alternative rock band R.E.M. Though known primarily as the bass guitarist and backing vocalist of R.E.M., his musical repertoire also includes keyboards and occasional lead vocals. He contributed to a majority of the band's musical compositions and is the only member to have had formal musical training. Early life Michael Edward Mills was born to Frank and Adora Mills in Orange County, California, where his father was stationed in the Marines. The family moved to Macon, Georgia, when Mills was around six months old. Mills met future R.E.M. bandmate Bill Berry while they attended high school in Macon. The duo started out in bands together. Nightswimming
"Nightswimming" is a song by American alternative rock band R.E.M. It was released in 1993 as the fifth single from the group's eighth album, ''Automatic for the People'' (1992). "Nightswimming" is a ballad featuring singer Michael Stipe accompanied only by bassist Mike Mills on piano (lyrics and music respectively, but credited to the whole band as usual), a string arrangement by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, and a prominent oboe by Deborah Workman in the latter part of the piece. Stipe sings about a group of friends who go skinny dipping at night, which draws from similar experiences in the band's early days. Background and recording Bassist Mike Mills recalled he was playing a piano riff at John Keane's studio in the band's hometown of Athens, Georgia. James Herbert (director)
James Herbert (born 1938) is an American painter and filmmaker known for directing a series of music videos for the band R.E.M. He has also made over forty short films, including ''John Five'' (1992) and ''Jumbo Aqua'' (2001), and directed four independent features: ''Scars'' (1997), ''Speedy Boys'' (1998), ''Rabbit Pix'' (2005) and ''Abandoned House'' (2007). Some of his short films have been collected on the video compilation ''Figures'' (1990). Biography Herbert was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his BA at Dartmouth College and his MFA at the University of Colorado in 1962. Jason "Jake" Scott (born August 1965) is a British film director who works primarily in the field of music videos and commercials. His father is film director Sir Ridley Scott. Career Most of his works were produced under the Ridley Scott Associates banner or RSA's music video subdivision Black Dog Films. Jem Alan Cohen (born 1962) is an Afghan-born American filmmaker based in New York City. Cohen is especially known for his observational portraits of urban landscapes, blending of media formats ( sixteen-millimetre, Super 8, videotape) and collaborations with musicians. Peter Care
Peter Alan Care (born 28 April 1953) is an English director of music videos, commercials and film. He has directed music videos for Cabaret Voltaire, R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen, Roy Orbison, Depeche Mode and New Order, amongst others. Biography Care began his directorial career as a film student at the Sheffield School of Art (in the North of England). Upon graduating, he set up the Sheffield Independent Film Company, with funding from the Arts Council and Channel 4.
