Paraguay competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. This was the nation's ninth appearance at the Olympics, except the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow because of its partial support to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott, United States boycott. Comité OlÃmpico Paraguayo sent the nation's largest delegation to the Games since the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona due to the presence of the men's football team. A total of 23 athletes, 21 men and 2 women, competed only in athletics, football, rowing, and swimming. The Paraguayan team featured two notable female athletes: javelin thrower Leryn Franco, who aspired to be one of the most beautiful women to compete at the Olympics because of her professional career as a model and beauty contestant, and single sculls rower Rocio Rivarola, aged seventeen, who later became the nation's first ever female flag bearer in the opening ceremony. José Ricardo Devaca Sánchez (born 18 September 1982) is a Paraguayan former Football (soccer), footballer who last played for Club Atlético Banfield, Banfield of the Argentine Primera División. Football At The 2004 Summer Olympics – Men's Tournament
The men's football tournament at the 2004 Summer Olympics was held in Athens and four other cities in Greece from 11 to 28 August. The tournament featured 16 men's national teams from the six continental confederations. The 16 teams were drawn into four groups of four, in which each team would play each of the others once. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams advanced to the knockout stage, beginning with the quarter-finals and culminating with the final at Athens' Olympic Stadium (Athens), Olympic Stadium on 28 August 2004. Aureliano Torres Román (born 16 June 1982) is a Paraguayan former footballer who last played for 12 de Octubre in the Paraguayan División Intermedia. Julio César Manzur Caffarena (born 22 January 1981) is a Paraguayan former footballer who last played for Rubio Ñu of the Paraguayan Primera División. Julio ValentÃn Ferreira González (born 26 August 1981 in Asunción) is a retired Paraguayan footballer who played as a striker. González played for Paraguay at the 2004 Olympics, helping the squad to a silver medal. He also competed with the team at the 2004 Copa América.
