Paperboys (documentary)
''Paperboys'' is a 2001 documentary film by American director Mike Mills. The 41-minute film, produced by Andy Spade, profiles six paperboys from Stillwater, Minnesota. They invite Mills into their homes, show him their personal effects, and answer questions about their lives and the future of paperboys. Parents weigh in on the benefits of their children's job and share thoughts on how the city has changed over the years. Mike Mills (director)
Michael Chadbourne Mills is an American film and music video director, writer and graphic designer. He is best known for his independent films, '' Beginners'' (2010), ''20th Century Women'' (2016), and '' C'mon, C'mon'' (2021). Mills received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay nomination for ''20th Century Women''. Early life and education Michael Chadbourne Mills was born in Berkeley, California, the son of Janet L. Dowd, a draftsperson, and Paul Chadbourne Mills, an art historian and museum director. He graduated from Cooper Union in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Career Mike Mills has created music videos for acts including Moby, Yoko Ono and Air. Steven Paul Smith (August 6, 1969 – October 21, 2003), known professionally as Elliott Smith, was an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and lived much of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he gained popularity. Smith's primary instrument was the guitar, though he also played piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. Child Labor In The United States
Child labor in the United States was a common phenomenon across the economy in the 19th century. Outside agriculture, it gradually declined in the early 20th century, except in the South which added children in textile and other industries. Child labor remained common in the agricultural sector until compulsory school laws were enacted by the states. In the North state laws prohibited work in mines and later in factories. A national law was passed in 1916 but it was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1918. A 1919 law was also overturned. In the 1920s an effort to pass a constitutional amendement failed, because of opposition from the South and from Catholics. Outside of farming child labor was steadily declining in the 20th century and the New Deal in 1938 finally ended child labor in factories and mines.
