Mama And Papa
In linguistics, mama and papa are considered a special case of false cognates. In many languages of the world, sequences of sounds similar to and mean "mother" and "father", usually but not always in that order. This is thought to be a coincidence resulting from the process of early language acquisition. Jakobson, R. (1962"Why 'mama' and 'papa'?"In Jakobson, R. Soviet Submarine K-222
''K-222'', Soviet designation Project 661 ''Anchar'', was a Soviet Navy nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine, the only one of its design. ''K-222'' was claimed to be the world's fastest submarine. Originally named ''K-162'', the boat was renamed ''K-222'' in 1978. It is best known in the West by its NATO reporting name, Papa class. Design The project was intentionally conceived to be highly innovative by discouraging the reuse of prior technical solutions. While forcing innovation, this also slowed development. Project 661 began in 1959, with the design task assigned to OKB-16, one of the two predecessors (along with SKB-143) of the Malakhit Central Design Bureau, which would eventually become one of the three Soviet/Russian submarine design centers, along with the Rubin Design Bureau and Lazurit Central Design Bureau. ''K-222'' was designed as an extremely fast attack submarine, and was the first submarine built with a titanium hull. The twin-propeller boat was armed with ... NATO Phonetic Alphabet
The (International) Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, commonly known as the NATO phonetic alphabet, is the most widely used set of clear code words for communicating the letters of the Roman alphabet, technically a ''radiotelephonic spelling alphabet.'' It goes by various names, including NATO spelling alphabet, ICAO phonetic alphabet and ICAO spelling alphabet. The ITU phonetic alphabet and figure code is a rarely used variant that differs in the code words for digits. To create the code, a series of international agencies assigned 26 code words acrophonically to the letters of the Roman alphabet, with the intention of the letters and numbers being easily distinguishable from one another over radio and telephone, regardless of language barriers and connection quality. The specific code words varied, as some seemingly distinct words were found to be ineffective in real-life conditions. In 1956, NATO modified the then-current set of code words used by the International ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Parallax Aircraft Parking Aid
A stand guidance system is a system which gives information to a pilot attempting to park an aircraft at an airport stand, usually via visual methods, leading to the term ''Visual Docking Guidance System'' (VDGS) and also ''A-VDGS'' (the A standing for advanced) This allows them to remain clear of obstructions and ensures that jetways can reach the aircraft. AGNIS VDGS Azimuth Guidance for Nose-In Stand is one of the most popular forms of stand guidance. It consists of two coloured lights mounted side by side. If the pilot is on the stand centreline they will see two green lights. If they are off centreline, one of the lights will appear red and the pilot then steers towards the green one. AGNIS alone provides only azimuth guidance, it does not inform pilots when they should stop. It is relatively imprecise but cheap to implement and reliable. PAPA The Parallax Aircraft Parking Aid is frequently combined with an AGNIS system, informing flight crews when to stop. The device featur ...
