Paolo Antonio Sperduti
Paolo Sperduti (1725–1799) was an Italian painter, active in Southern Italy and Rome. He was born in either Venafro or Arpino, but Sperduti travelled to Rome and studied under Agostino Masucci. Venafro (Latin: ''Venafrum''; Greek: ) is a ''comune'' in the province of Isernia, region of Molise, Italy. It has a population of 11,079, having expanded quickly in the post-war period. Arpino ( Southern Latian dialect: ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the province of Frosinone, in the Latin Valley, region of Lazio in central Italy, about 100 km SE of Rome. Its Roman name was Arpinum. The town produced two consuls of the Roman republic: Gaius Marius and Marcus Tullius Cicero. History The ancient city of Arpinum dates back to at least the 7th century BC. Agostino Masucci
Agostino Masucci (; c. 1691 – 19 October 1758) was an Italian painter of the late-Baroque or Rococo period. Biography Born in Rome, he initially apprenticed with Andrea Procaccino, and then became a member of the studio of Carlo Maratta. He joined the Accademia di San Luca in 1724, and from 1736 to 1738, he was director or ''Principe''. Masucci worked for the House of Savoy, and also obtained commissions from John V of Portugal due to his friendship with Filippo Juvarra and Luigi Vanvitelli. For example, for the latter he painted the main altarpiece of the Cathedral of Évora. Masucci also made the models for the three main mosaic panels in the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, designed by Luigi Vanvitelli (along with Nicola Salvi) for King John V of Portugal. Annunziata, Venafro
The Annunziata (Church of the Virgin of the Annunciation) is a Baroque-style, Roman Catholic church located in a central part of the town of Venafro, province of Isernia, region of Molise, Italy. History A church dates prior to the mid-1300s, but required rebuilding after the earthquake of 1349, and was completed by 1387, under the patronage of a Confraternity of flagellants. The walls include spolia from an ancient Roman temple on the site. The church was first enlarged in 1519. The present layout derives from a reconstruction in 1641, granting it present mainly-Baroque style. The bell-tower was built in the 1750s. The facade, with a rounded pediment, has a central portal flanked by two ancient Roman column elements, presumably from the prior temple at the site. The main portal completed in the 18th century has an arch with the emblem of the confraternity.
