Fly Creek also known as Vlaie Creek, begins by the border of the Town of Otsego and Town of Springfield in Otsego County, New York. Fly Creek then travels south towards the hamlet of Fly Creek and converges with Oaks Creek south of the hamlet of Fly Creek. The Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard is located next to Fly Creek. The Mill gets power to make cider from the Fly Creek water flow and is the last remaining mill in the area. Fly Creek is also located partly within the Fly Creek Historic District. History One theory to the name of the creek goes that as early as 1714 Dutch traders passed through the area traveling to Otsego Lake. The Dutch word for “marsh” is “vlie”. Oaks Creek
Oaks Creek is a river that drains Canadarago Lake, which is situated in the north central region of Otsego County, New York. The creek begins by the Hamlet of Schuyler Lake and flows southeast approximately , dropping only in elevation, before converging with the Susquehanna River south of the Village of Cooperstown, by the Hamlet of Index. From the source to Oaksville the creek flows along Panther Mountain. Fly Creek is a main tributary, that converges with Oaks Creek south of the Hamlet of Fly Creek. Canadarago Lake
Canadarago Lake is a lake located in Otsego County, New York and is the source of Oaks Creek. The Village of Richfield Springs is located at the lake's northern end. It is the second largest lake in Otsego County, lying to the west of and parallel to the larger Otsego Lake. The lake's name is also spelled "Candajarago Lake" or "Caniadaraga Lake". The lake has two islands. One island is known as Deowongo Island. The island's name is said to mean, "Place of Hearing", coming from the Oneida Iroquois nation’s language, and was given to the island because of the echo that was noticeable from that body of land. The Panther (Sam Brushell)
The Panther was a Mohegan Indian who lived in the Town of Richfield in Otsego County, New York in the beginning to mid 1800s. He was the son of an Indian named Captain John. Biography Brushell's father was known as Captain John; they had a wigwam for a time built on Tunnicliff land near a lake. After his father's death he moved back to the Connecticut Valley where he and his father had moved from. He remained there a few years and then returned to the grave of his father, and build a Wigwam on the Chamberlin Farm in the Town of Richfield. The Panther was a peaceful Indian who would frequently give bows and arrows to children. He took the liberty to cut timber on any property when he wanted, regarding it as his right as a native of the forest. He also believed that where he left his possessions, that they should be safe from trespassers. Mohegan
The Mohegan are an Algonquian Native American tribe historically based in present-day Connecticut. Today the majority of the people are associated with the Mohegan Indian Tribe, a federally recognized tribe living on a reservation in the eastern upper Thames River valley of south-central Connecticut.
